Impact of Sentiment on Exchange Traded Funds (ETF)

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá vztah mezi sentimentem investorů a výnosy burzovně obchodova-telných fondů (ETFs) v rámci různých sektorů na evropském trhu. V teoretické části je definován tržní sentiment, způsoby jeho měření a jejich využití. Dále je uvedena základní teorie týkající se burzovně obchodovatelných fondů se zaměřením na specializované sektorové fondy. V praktické části je analyzován vztah mezi sentimentem a výnosy sektorových fondů pomocí analýzy funkce reakcí na impulzy (IRF). Nejprve je sestrojena kombinovaná IRF pro European Sentiment Indi-cator (ESI), který reprezentuje celkový sentiment na evropském trhu, a sektorové výnosy bur-zovně obchodovatelných fondů. Dále je sestavena IRF také pro dva specializované indikátory sentimentu, Financial Services Indicator a Consumer Indicator, a jejich odpovídající sektorové fondy. Výsledky těchto dvou analýz jsou následně porovnány. Na závěr jsou shrnuty veškeré výsledky a jsou zformulována případná doporučení pro úspěšné využití indikátorů sentimentu při obchodování sektorových cenných papírů.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis investigates the relationship between the investor sentiment and returns of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the different sectors of the European market. The theoretical part defines the market sentiment, its measures and their usage, followed by the basic theory about exchange-traded funds with focus on the specialized sector funds. The practical part anal-yses the relationship between sentiment and returns of sector ETFs by employing the analysis of impulse response function (IRF). Firstly, we construct the combined IRF for the European Sen-timent Indicator (ESI) as a proxy for a general European sentiment, and the sector ETFs’ returns. Secondly, we employ IRF also for two specialized sentiment proxies - Financial Services Indica-tor and Consumer Indicator and the corresponding ETFs’ returns. The performance of the gen-eral sentiment indicator – ESI and the two specialized indicators is then compared. As a final point, the results are reviewed and the recommendations are proposed for the successful use of the sentiment indicators when trading particular sector stocks.
