Relationship between Color and Tone. Phenomenon of Color-hearing and Efforts to Apply it into the Real Art

Abstract:

Barevné slyšení je nejběžnějším druhem synestezie, při níž dochází k překřížení smyslových drah a počitek pak vyvolává reakci jiného smyslu, popřípadě více smyslů zároveň. Barva vyvstává vždy bezděčně a je vysoce subjektivní. Od 16. století se začaly hledat souvislosti mezi tónem a barvou, nejfrekventovanější byla snaha aplikovat kvintový kruh na barevné spektrum. S rozvojem techniky v 19. století se začala synestezie využívat pro tvůrčí koncepce v podobě tvorby barevných klavírů. Tyto snahy vyvrcholily v dalším století, především v díle Alexandera Nikolajeviče Skrjabina. Ve své symfonické Poémě Ohně – Prométheovi jako první zapojil barevný klavír. Na českém území se podobnými experimenty zabýval Zdeněk Pešánek.

Abstract:

Colour-hearing is the most common type of synaesthesia, which involves crossing of sense pathways, produces a response of a different sense, or more senses simultaneously. A spontaneous reaction arises in mind, when seeing the color, which is also a highly individual and subjective feeling. Since the 16th century people began to uncover connections between the tone/key and color. Arranging keys in a circle of musical quints, was the most common experiment. With the technological development in the 19th century synaesthesia began to be achieved in a phenomenon of colour organs. These efforts culminated in the following century, particularly in the work of Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin. As the first, he incorporated colour organ in his symphonic Poem of Fire – Prometheus. In Czech territory similar experiments were performed by Zdeněk Pešánek.
