The Critical Works of the So-Called Pragmatic Generation

Abstract:

Tématem předkládané práce je literární kritika produkovaná tzv. pragmatickou (čapkovskou) generací; s časovým vymezením od publikačních počátků této generace před první světovou válkou do konce třicátých let, kdy většina jejích kritických hlasů umlká. Výzkum literární kritiky je proveden v kontextu kritiky výtvarné a divadelní. Pozornost je věnována předně vymezení generace jednak jako kategorie literární historie, jednak pragmatické generace a jejího místa v kontextu moderní české literatury. Cesta k tomuto vymezení je nalezena v analýze ustavování generace v dobovém kritickém diskursu. Proto jsou zkoumány generační polemiky před první světovou válkou a ve dvacátých letech. Generace se ukazuje jako jev dynamický, podrobovaný reinterpretacím. Nejvýznamnější etapou v kritickém díle této generace je období před první světovou válkou, kdy se čapkovská generace stává jádrem nové (předválečné) moderny; toto období se vyznačuje dominancí programové kritiky, která je zaměřena negativně vůči etablovaným uměleckým normám představovaným generací 90. let. Zároveň přináší přístupy a názory, které formují trvale charakter této generace: pozitivní vztah k modernímu životu ve všech jeho podobách, odmítnutí tradice, pochopení umění jako práce a poznávání skutečnosti, básník jako občan, autonomie umělecké formy. Nové moderní umění je pochopeno jako široký proud, jemuž nelze klást meze. Po válečném hiátu je programová kritika nahrazena kritikou interpretační; od dvacátých let se postupně literární kritika dostává u většiny autorů na okraj zájmu. Současně se toto období vyznačuje výrazným vlivem filozofie pragmatismu a revizí některých předválečných názorů (zejména kategorie života). Práce ukazuje, že generační kritické dílo je třeba chápat nejen v jednotnosti, ale také v různosti, neboť je představováno kritiky nejen odlišných názorů, ale také odlišného typu: Karel Čapek jako odborný kritik, Miroslav Rutte jako kritik filozofující a meditativní, Josef Kodíček jako subjektivistický a konfrontační psycholog a Ferdinand Peroutka jako normativní kritik „nového realismu“ a stoupenec zdravého rozumu.

Abstract:

The presented Ph.D. thesis deals with the critical works of the so-called “pragmatic” (or “Čapek’s”) generation from its emerging in the Czech literature on the eve of WWI till the end of the 1930s, when its voices mostly became silent. The research focuses on the literary criticism, but it takes into account also the art and theatre criticism. The author highlights the problem of the definition of a literary generation as a category, as well as the pragmatic generation and its position in the context of the Czech modern literature. He finds the way to define the generation in the analysis of its establishing in the contemporary critical discourse. Therefore, the generation controversies in the 1910s and 1920s are studied. The generation appears as a dynamical phenomenon, which is open for reinterpretations. The most important period in the generation’s history took place in the years of 1912-1914, when it became the core of new modernism; this stage is characterized by the domination of the programmatic criticism directed against the established aesthetic norms represented by the generation of the 1890s. This era brought approaches and views that formed the generation’s character: a positive stance to present life in its all forms, a rejection of tradition, understanding the arts as a work and cognition of reality, a poet as a citizen, autonomy of arts. New modern arts are taken as a broad stream; no limits can be set to it. After the WWI, the generation left the programmatic criticism and focused on the interpretative criticism. The influence of the pragmatic philosophy is significant for this stage, as well as the revision of some former thoughts (especially the category of life). Since the 1920s, the generation was leaving its interest in the literary criticism. This Ph.D. thesis illustrates that we have to comprehend the generation’s critical work not only as a unity, but also as a variety, because it is represented by different critics: Karel Čapek as a scholarly critic, Miroslav Rutte as a philosophizing and meditative critic, Josef Kodíček as a subjectivistic and confrontative psychologist and Ferdinand Peroutka as a normative critic of “new realism“ and supporter of common-sense.
