From quadriplegia to the recovery of autonomy of a bedridden patient following an occupational accident: clinical case

Abstract:

The first chapter of this paper will deal with the anatomy and physiology of the spinal cord and the various constituent parts of the nervous system and the composition of its tissue will be illustrated. Vertebro-medullary lesions and related epidemiology, etiology and traumatology will be presented in the second chapter, while in the third chapter the physiology of walking and some types of gait dysfunctions will be presented. The fourth chapter includes an excursus on the various possible medical, pharmacological, rehabilitative and occupational therapies. Within this paper, a clinical case of a polytrauma patient following an occupational accident, forced into bed by spastic tetraparesis, will be described and the related rehabilitation process will be illustrated, up to the complete recovery of walking independently. The goal of the thesis will be to present a clear image of the spinal cord injury and all that it entails on a health, social and human level for information and also to raise awareness.

Abstract:

Nel primo capitolo di questo scritto si tratter? l'anatomia e la fisiologia del midollo spinale e si illustreranno le varie parti costituenti del sistema nervoso e la composizione del suo tessuto. Le lesioni vertebro-midollari e la relativa epidemiologia, eziologia e traumatologia saranno esposte nel secondo capitolo, mentre nel terzo sar? presentata la fisiologia della deambulazione e alcune tipologie di disfunzioni del cammino. Il quarto capitolo comprende un excursus sulle varie terapie mediche, farmacologiche, riabilitative e occupazionali possibili. All'interno di questo elaborato sar? descritto un caso clinico di un paziente politraumatizzato in seguito ad incidente professionale, costretto all'allettamento da tetraparesi spastica e si illustrer? il relativo percorso riabilitativo, fino al completo recupero della deambulazione in autonomia. L'obiettivo della tesi sar? quello di presentare un'immagine chiara della lesione midollare e di tutto ci? che comporta a livello sanitario, sociale e umano a scopo informativo e anche di sensibilizzazione.
