The Theme of Death in Czech Psychological Prose in the 1930s and 1940s

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na analýzu tematiky smrti v české psychologické próze 30. a 40. let 20. století. Tematika je zkoumána prostřednictvím podrobné analýzy čtyř děl vybraných autorů: Egona Hostovského (Případ profesora Körnera, 1932), Karla Josefa Beneše (Uloupený život, 1935), Jarmily Glazarové (Vlčí jáma, 1938) a Jaroslava Havlíčka (Synáček, 1942). Analýza se soustředí zejména na motivickou výstavbu související s tematikou smrti a charakteristiku postav s ohledem na jejich vztah ke smrti. Pozornost bude rovněž věnována komparacím v rámci další tvorby téhož autora a dobové recepci analyzovaných děl. Cílem práce je přispět ke zkoumání daného žánru ve vymezeném období; v užším slova smyslu pak vysledovat užití motivických okruhů spojených se smrtí v rámci tvorby vybraných autorů a zjistit, zda se dané okruhy prolínají napříč žánrem jako takovým.

Abstract:

The aim of the master thesis is a detailed analysis of theme of death in selected psychological proses from 1930s and 1940s. The main analysis contains of four novels: Egon Hostovský (The Professor Körner´s Case, 1932), Karel Josef Beneš (The Stolen Life, 1932), Jarmila Glazarová (The Wolf Pit, 1938) and Jaroslav Havlíček (The Little Son, 1942). Main attention is paid to the characters in connection with death and interpretation of used motifs of death. The thesis also consists of short interpretations of other prose by the selected authors and their critical reception. The main goal of this thesis is to contribute to the research in this particular area, specifically define the motifs of death and possibly point out the repetitious elements.
