History of Terrorism in the United States of America and its Impact on the Recent and Current Situation in the Country + text analysis

Abstract:

Domníváme se, že se na konci 20. století snížilo nebezpečí globálního konfliktu. Ale není to úplně jednoznačné. Dle nejaktuálnějších zpráv Spojené státy rozmístí v Německu 20 jaderných zbraní, přičemž každá z nich disponuje čtyřnásobkem destruktivní síly než bomba, která byla shozena na Hirošimu. Dle ruského ministerstva zahraničí se jedná o porušení článků 1 a 2 Smlouvy o nešíření jaderných zbraní. A pokud dnes můžeme věřit médiím, Spojené státy v roce 2017 vynaloží 71,4 miliardy dolarů na vývoj ještě chytřejších zbraní, které by měly zasáhnout cíl ještě přesněji, než současná chytrá munice. Zároveň Spojené státy tvrdí, že je třeba potenciálním nepřátelům ukázat, že pokud dojde k válce, jsou připraveni ji vyhrát. V roce 2014 se vojenský rozpočet Spojených států vyšplhal na 610 miliard dolarů, což je téměř třikrát větší částka než má rozpočet v Číně s 216 miliardami, následuje Rusko s 84,5 miliardami amerických dolarů. Procentuálně Spojené státy zastupují světovou produkci vojenské obranné techniky ze 34 procent. Pokud bude napětí s Ruskem stupňovat, je pravděpodobné, že země NATO budou nuceny překročit stanovený limit 2 % HDP na obranné výdaje. Po celé 20. století patřily Spojené státy americké mezi nejvyspělejší státy světa a snažily se zachovat si tento post i na počátku následujícího století. Rok 2001 se po teroristických útocích na USA stal historickým mezníkem v této zemi i v mezinárodních vztazích a předurčil tak další vývoj této země. USA si ve 20. století vydobyly post, který si mermomocí chtějí udržet i dnes. Aktivita USA ve světě a uplatňování moci je trnem v oku mnoha států. Velkou pákou v oblasti veřejného mínění jsou také média. Televize, noviny a v neposlední řadě také internet, to vše jsou nástroje k ovlivnění názoru i myšlení lidí. Tato manipulace s občany je velmi nebezpečná a může uškodit. Proto je nutné volit slova opatrně a řeč by se nikdy neměla stát nástrojem propagandy. Předkládaná bakalářská práce má za úkol proniknout do problematiky terorismu ve Spojených státech, zároveň se však snaží o provázaný výklad teroristických skutků, jejich dopad na americkou společnost a média v minulosti a nastínit jeho současný vývoj. Čím dál častěji se kolem nás objevuje pojem "Válka proti terorismu", proto se autorka pokusí vysvětlit, co tento jev znamená a co se touto válkou vlastně sleduje. V textu a převážně v kapitolách 3 a 4 budou zkoumány články ze zahraničních i domácích médií, přičemž snahou této práce je nezaujaté posouzení těchto zpráv. Rovněž se práce zabývá způsobem používání jazyka v těchto zprávách. Autorka se v této práci pokusí zodpovědět následující výzkumné otázky: Jakým způsobem a tónem vyznívají zprávy nesoucí poselství a varování před terorismem a teroristickými útoky v médiích? Jak je terorismus v současných textech zobrazen? Jak média ovlivňují myšlení lidí? Celkově je práce rozdělena do 4 kapitol a součástí je také úvod a závěr. Úvodní část slouží k seznámení s tématem a vymezením výzkumných otázek. První kapitola seznamuje s etymologií slova terorismus, jeho prvním použitím a celkovou historií pojmu. V kapitole zmiňujeme několik výkladů pojmu terorismus, který v práci dále aplikujeme. Další částí práce je druhá kapitola, která se zabývá čistě historií teroristických útoků na území USA. V této kapitole se také snažíme o provázání globálních událostí s děním a útoky ve Spojených státech. Tato kapitola je klíčová pro analytickou část práce, neboť pochopením historie lze aplikovat získané poznatky do dalších kapitol. Třetí a čtvrtou kapitolou autorka analyzuje zprávy z novin.

Abstract:

We assume the global threat of nuclear conflict has lowered by the end of the 20th century. But this assumption is not definitive. According to the latest information, the United States will place 20 nuclear weapons all over Germany, of which each of these weapons holds four times the destructive power than the bomb used on Hiroshima. According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs this action is in violation of the 1st and 2nd article of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. And if the information given by the media is correct, the USA will be spending 71,4 billion US dollars on research of even smarter weapons, which are claimed to be more accurate at hitting targets than its predecessors. The media also claims that, shall a war break out, the Americans are more than ready to be victorious and it's important to show potential enemies of this fact. Through the whole of the 20th century, the USA had been named one of the most advanced countries in the world and they tried to keep this title through the beginning of the following century. After the terrorist attacks on the US in 2001, this year became a milestone in terms of international relations and predicted the future development of this country. In the 20th century, the US got the aforementioned title of being one of the most advanced countries in the world, and to this day they're trying their hardest to keep this title. This can be seen through their activity in the world and the abusing of it's power, which is a headache to many countries, however the thing to point out is the way this is being done, which is with much concealment and covertness. One of the big influences on the public opinion is the media. Television, newspapers, and in the last decade the internet, all of these are the perfect tools to shape people's views and opinions. As one might suspect, this type of manipulation is very powerful and can turn very dangerous. This bachelor thesis deals with the issues of terrorism in the United States the acts of terrorism, its effects on the American public and the media in the past and its evolvement. Lately we've been hearing the term "War against terrorism" extremely often, and I'll be trying to explain the meaning of this term and also the aim target of this so-called war against terrorism. In this text, especially in chapters 3 and 4, I will be taking an in-depth look into foreign and domestic media articles, with the aim of the thesis being an unbiased assessment of these articles. The thesis also deals with the use of specific forms of language-in terms of stylistics-these articles contain. The author of this thesis tries to answer the following questions of research: What form and tone is being used in articles warning about terrorism and terrorist attacks in media? How is terrorism depicted in current media coverage? How does media influence the opinions of people? This whole thesis is separated into 4 chapters and contains an introduction and a conclusion. The introductory part is there to introduce the reader into the subject of this thesis and the choice of the questions of research. The first chapter introduces the reader to the etymology of the term "terrorism", its first use and the overall history of the term. In this chapter I'll be mentioning a few different descriptions of terrorism which are then applied to the thesis. The second chapter deals solely with the history of terrorist attacks on the American soil. In this chapter I'll also be trying to link global events and happenings with these terrorist attacks. This chapter is key for the analytical part of the thesis, in that by understanding the previous reasons for these attacks we can then apply gained information onto the next chapters. The purpose of the third and fourth chapters is to analyze newspaper articles. The conclusion sums up the thesis.
