The Correspondence between Anthony Collins and Samuel Clarke

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na analýzu korespondence (1706-1709) mezi anglickými filosofy Samuelem Clarkem a Anthony Collinsem. První kapitola představuje vznik, kontext a význam dané debaty. Zároveň poukazuje na originalitu některých myšlenek obsažených v tomto dialogu. V následujících tematicky rozčleněných kapitolách se věnuji komparaci odlišných názorů obou myslitelů na různé filosofické problémy, identifikaci možných zdrojů inspirace a zhodnocení platnosti jednotlivých propozic a námitek. Hlavní část práce obsahuje rozbor argumentů Clarka a Collinse z oblasti metafyziky. Popisuji konflikt mezi Clarkovým redukcionismem, pramenícím z tradičního dualismu mezi tělem a duší, a materialismem Collinse, který zároveň obhajuje emergentismus a možnost existence myslící hmoty. Dále prezentuji Clarkův raný myšlenkový experiment užívající duplikaci a jeho kritiku teorií osobní identity založených na psychologické kontinuitě. Nakonec srovnávám libertariánskou pozici Clarka a verzi kompatibilismu Collinse v rámci otázky svobodné vůle.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the analysis of the correspondence (1706-1709) between the English philosophers Samuel Clarke and Anthony Collins. The first chapter introduces the origin, context, and significance of the debate. It also points out the originality of certain ideas contained in the dialogue. In the following thematically divided chapters I compare the differing opinions of both thinkers on various philosophical problems, identify possible sources of inspiration, and evaluate the validity of particular propositions and objections. The main part of the thesis contains the analysis of metaphysical arguments used by Clarke and Collins. I describe the conflict between reductionism of Clarke, stemming from the traditional dualism between body and soul, and materialism of Collins, who also defends emergentism and the possibility of thinking matter. Moreover, I present early thought experiment by Clarke employing duplication and his criticism of theories of personal identity based on psychological continuity. Finally, I contrast the libertarian position of Clarke and a version of compatibilism presented by Collins concerning the question of free will.
