Discovering potential and developing strengths in children from the perspective of pupils, teachers, and parents

Abstract:

Cílem výzkumu bylo komplexní prozkoumání fenoménu potenciálu a silných stránek ve výchově a vzdělávání. Výzkum se zaměřoval zejména na potenciál dítěte, jednak z pohledu dětí samých, jednak z pohledu jejich rodičů a jejich třídních učitelů. Záměrem bylo zjistit, jak jsou silné stránky a potenciál dítěte nahlíženy, ale také rozvíjeny jednotlivými stranami. Dalšími ohnisky zájmu byly také zkušenosti rodičů a učitelů se svými vlastními silnými stránkami a se vzájemnou spoluprací na rozvoji dítěte. Výzkumná práce staví na bohaté teoretické základně, která vedle tématu potenciálu a souvisejících pojmů představuje také kapitoly věnované osobnosti a vlivu rodiny a školy na její vývoj. Teoretická část dále představuje modely kvalitního fungování rodiny a školy, včetně specifické oblasti pozitivní výchovy a edukace. Do výzkumu byly zapojeny tři trojice dětí, jejich rodičů a třídních učitelů, s nimiž byly vedeny polostrukturované rozhovory. Data byla zpracována metodou interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Výsledková část přináší analýzu zkušeností respondentů s tématem potenciálu a uvědomování si svých vlastních silných stránek i silných stránek u druhých, představuje shody a rozdíly mezi náhledy jednotlivých participantů. Analýza prezentuje také přesah zkušeností dospělých respondentů ze svého dětství a vliv těchto zážitků na vlastní výchovný či vyučovací přístup. Ve stručnosti je také věnován prostor prožitkům s některými tématy v období pandemie onemocnění COVID-19. V rámci diskuze jsou výsledky zkoumání zasazeny do kontextu dřívějších výzkumů a dalších poznatků uváděných literaturou. Vedle výsledků aktuálního výzkumu studie nabízí množství implikací pro další zkoumání i pro běžnou praxi.

Abstract:

The purpose of the research was a complex exploration of the potential and strengths in education and upbringing phenomenon. The research aimed especially at the children’s potential from the point of view of the children themselves, of their parents, and their class teachers. The goal was to find out how the potential and the strengths are viewed, and also developed by the mentioned subjects. Other focuses were the parents’ and teachers’ experience with their own strengths and with cooperation in developing the child. The research work builds on a wide theoretical basis, which, apart from the topic of the potential and its related concepts, presents chapters devoted to personality, and family and school influence on its development. The theoretical part also outlines the models of family and school high-quality functioning, including the specific area of positive upbringing and education. Three threesomes of a child, his/her parent and his/her class teacher took part in the research. Semi-structured dialogues were conducted with them. The data were processed with the method of interpretative phenomenological analysis. The results part brings an analysis of the respondents’ experience with the topic of potential and realizing their own and other people’s strengths; it presents the correspondence and differencies between the individual participants views. The analysis also communicates the overlap of the adult respondents childhood experience and an influence of such experience on their own upbringing or educational attitudes. An experience with some topics arisen from the COVID-19 pandemic are mentioned briefly. Within discussion, the research results are set into context of earlier researches and other findings presented in science books and articles. Apart from the current research results, the study offers a number of implications for further investigation as well as for ordinary practice.
