Life Meaningfulness as Viewed by Individuals with Eating Disorder

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se ve své teoretické části zabývá konceptem životní smysluplnosti. Přináší její možné definice, teoretické i výzkumné zakotvení. Další oblastí zájmu práce jsou osoby s poruchami příjmu potravy, která je zde také vymezená z hlediska svých diagnostických kritérií, etiologie a léčby. V rámci přiblížení charakteristik věkové kategorie, na kterou je výzkumné šetření zacílené, je nastíněno propojení obou uvedených témat. Výzkumná část usiluje o doložení spojitosti životní smysluplnosti a poruch příjmu potravy. Činí tak na základě analýzy shromážděných dat z dotazníku Sense of Coherence (Smysl pro soudržnost), který byl administrován ženám ve věku 15-39 let s diagnózou mentální anorexie a mentální bulimie léčených buď ambulantně, nebo hospitalizací. K této skupině byl vytvořen také kontrolní soubor, se kterým byla skupina s poruchami příjmu potravy porovnávána. Výsledky výzkumného šetření potvrzují, že osoby s poruchami příjmu potravy skutečně prožívají svůj život průměrně méně intenzivně jako smysluplný. Potvrzeny byly také nižší dosažené skóry v dimenzi Srozumitelnost, Zvládnutelnost, tak i v celkovém skóru Sense of Coherence.

Abstract:

This Diploma thesis is, in its theoretical part, concerned with the concept of meaningfulness of life. The dissertation provides possible definitions of the matter of interest along with theoretical and experimental specifications. It also focuses on the subject of individuals with eating disorder in terms of diagnostic criteria, etiology and treatment. Finally, within surveyed age category, a unification of both topics is outlined. The aim of the empirical part is to substantiate the relation between meaningfulness of life and eating disorder by analyzing data gathered in the Sense of Coherence questionnaire. The subjects of the survey were women in outpatient or hospitalization treatment aged 15-39 and diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A control group of respondents was fashioned for results comparison. On the basis of the outcome of this research, it can be concluded that individuals with eating disorder consider their lives on average as less meaningful. The study confirms the premise of reaching lesser scores in Comprehensibility and Manageability section in addition to overall Sense of Coherence score.
