Development of Test of Capabilities of Critical Thinking and its Pilot Validization

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na vývoj, pilotáž a psychometrické ověřování vlastností nového testu měřícího konstrukt kritického myšlení. Test předpokladů kritického myšlení vychází z nově zpracovaného modelu kritického myšlení a zaměřuje se na měření tří základních schopností potřebných pro kritické myšlení. Jsou jimi analýza, evaluace a inference. Po fázi vývoje testu byl test administrován studentům maturitních ročníků středních odborných škol a gymnázií (n=213). Analýzy fungování položek a srovnání průměrných výkonů skupin indikovaly genderovou neutralitu testu. Faktorové analýzy identifikovaly jeden hlavní, analyticko-inferenční faktor. Evaluační položky vlastní faktor neutvořily a vztah mezi nimi a analyticko-inferenčním faktorem byl převážně slabý. Výsledky analýz testu tak indikují pravděpodobnou multidimenzionalitu konstruktu kritického myšlení a nezanedbatelné množství dalších proměnných ovlivňujících výkon v testu mimo předpokládané tři schopnosti. S ohledem na fungování položek a jejich faktorovou strukturu byly navrženy další úpravy pro budoucí verzi testu.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the development, pilot study and evaluation of psychometrical functioning of a newly developed test measuring critical thinking. Test of Capabilities of Critical Thinking is based on a newly reconstructed model of critical thinking. It is intended to measure the level of three basic skills important for critical thinking. Namely: analysis, evaluation and inference. After the phase of test development, the final version of the test was administered to the sample of high school and grammar school graduating students (n=213). Analysis of functioning of the items and comparison of mean group performance showed results indicating gender neutrality of the test. Factor analysis identified one main analytical-inferential factor. Evaluative items did not form the independent factor and their correlation with analytical-inferential factor was rather weak. Results of the analysis indicate multidimensionality of the critical thinking construct and significant amount of variables influencing performance of the test takers different from three main assumed skills. Based on the item functioning evaluation and factor structure, recommendations for further adjustment of the future version of the test were made.
