Provenance and transport history of bedload sediments in Algal and Bohemian streams, James Ross Island

Abstract:

The content of this bachelor thesis deals with the provenance and transport origin of the bedload sediments from Algal Stream and Bohemian Stream, including its right tributary Dirty Stream on James Ross Island in Antarctica. It is evident from previous studies that aeolian transport has a significant presence in deglaciated parts of the island, as well as in the transfer of material. The aim of this work was to determine the transport origin of bed sediments and to find out how significant this aeolian transport is. The surface features of separated quartz grains were studied using a binocular microscope. Further, microstructures were examined using a scanning electron microscope. Another aim was to determine the provenance of sediments. The provenance was determined by two analyses, laboratory-determined magnetic susceptibility measured in two frequencies and elemental composition using X-ray fluorescence measurements. All results from both objectives were statistically processed and visualized. From the samples examined, the aeolian transport was not confirmed. Therefore, it can be argued that the aeolian transport is negligible within the bedload sediment and that more important are fluvial processes and glacial processes. Provenance of samples was confirmed mostly cretaceous marine sediments from Mesozoic.

Abstract:

Obsah bakalárskej práce sa zaoberá provenienciou a transportným pôvodom dnových splavenín z tokov Algal Stream a Bohemian Stream vrátane jeho pravého prítoku Dirty Stream na ostrove Jamesa Rossa v Antarktíde. Z predošlých štúdií je zrejmé, že eolický transport má významné zastúpenie v odľadnených častiach ostrova aj pri prenose materiálu. Cieľom práce bolo zistiť transportný pôvod splavenín a zistiť tak, aký významný je tento eolický transport. Boli študované povrchové vlastnosti vyseparovaných kremenných zŕn pomocou binokulárneho mikroskopu. Ďalej boli podrobnejšie skúmané jednotlivé mikroštruktúry pomocou skenovacieho elektrónového mikroskopu. Ďalším cieľom bolo zistiť provenienciu sedimentov. Proveniencia bola zisťovaná dvoma analýzami, a to laboratórne stanovenou magnetickou susceptibilitou meranou v dvoch frekvenciách a prvkovým zložením s využitím röntgen fluorescenčného merania. Všetky výsledky z obidvoch cieľov boli štatisticky spracované a vizualizované. Zo skúmaných vzoriek nebol eolický transport potvrdený. Je preto možné tvrdiť, že eolický transport je v rámci dnových splavenín zanedbateľný a významnejšie sú abiotické procesy ako fluviálny transport a ľadovcové procesy. Za provenienciu vzoriek boli potvrdené najmä kriedové morské sedimenty z obdobia mezozoika.
