Association between Problematic Social Media Use and Social Factors in Adolescents

Abstract:

Problematické užívání sociálních médií (PUSM) je dnes narůstající problém, a to obzvláště u adolescentů. Dle Modelu rozdílné náchylnosti ovlivňují efekt médií na člověka tři typy faktorů, a to dispoziční, vývojové a sociální. Tato studie zkoumala souvislost mezi PUSM u adolescentů a dosud přehlíženými sociálními faktory, konkrétně podporou rodiny, rodinnou komunikací, podporou vrstevníků, školní podporou a problematickým sousedstvím. Práce spočívala v sekundární analýze dat ze studie Health Behaviour in School-aged Children, která proběhla v roce 2018 v České republice. Data byla sbíraná formou dotazníků na základních školách a víceletých gymnáziích. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 10 434 adolescentů ve věku 9–16 let. Výsledky ukázaly, že podpora vrstevníků nebyla ve vztahu k PUSM signifikantní. Asociace všech dalších sociálních faktorů s PUSM však signifikantní byly. V souladu s hypotézami se ukázalo, že podpora rodiny, školy a rodinná komunikace s PUSM souvisí negativně, zatímco problematické sousedství pozitivně. Při dalším výzkumu PUSM ani v intervencích proti němu by tedy sociální faktory neměly být opomíjeny. Jejich podíl na PUSM je v porovnání s dalšími faktory sice menší, ale nezanedbatelný.

Abstract:

Problematic social media use (PUSM) is an increasing problem today, especially among adolescents. According to the Differential Susceptibility Model, three factors influence the media's effect on a person, namely dispositional, developmental, and social. This study examined the association between adolescent PUSM and hitherto overlooked social factors, namely family support, family communication, peer support, school support, and problematic neighbourhood. This paper consisted of a secondary analysis of data from the Health Behavior in School-aged Children study, which took place in 2018 in the Czech Republic. Data were collected through questionnaires at primary schools and high schools. The research group consisted of 10,434 adolescents aged 9–16 years. The results showed that peer support was not significant in relation to PUSM. However, the associations of all other social factors with PUSM were significant. In line with the hypotheses, family support, school support, and family communication were negatively related to PUSM, while neighbourhood was positively related. Thus, social factors should not be neglected in further research on PUSM or interventions against it. Their share in PUSM is indeed smaller compared to other factors, but not negligible.
