From Stage to Screen: The Poetry of Adapting Macbeth

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je najít odpověď na otázku, jak konkrétní filmové adaptace Macbetha Williama Shakespeara přistupují ke zpracování a převyprávění příběhu, který se ve svém počátečním pojetí opíral především o obrazotvornost dialogů zasazených do prostorově omezených scén. Cílem analýzy je popsat, jak Macbeth Orsona Wellese (1948), Throne of Blood Akiry Kurosawy (1957) a Macbeth Justina Kurzela (2015) obohacují tuto starou tragédii o audiovizuální poezii. Dalším cílem práce je rozlišit důraz jednotlivých režisérů na konkrétní aspekty, symboly, motivy a témata, které utvářejí celkový příběh.

Abstract:

The primary concern of the thesis is to answer the question of how specific film adaptations of William Shakespeare's Macbeth approach the depiction of the story that in its conception relied primarily on the poetry of dialog and few stage setups. The aim of the analysis is to describe how Orson Welles’ Macbeth (1948), Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (1957), and Justin Kurzel's Macbeth (2015) enrich this old tragedy with the poetry of image and sound. Another goal of the thesis is to discern the emphasis of each director on specific aspects, symbols, motifs, and themes that shape the whole story.
