Ostrava - shrinking city?

Abstract:

Předmětem bakalářské práce je analýza konceptu „shrinking cities“ a jeho aplikace na konkrétním případu města Ostravy. První část definuje pojem „shrinking cities“, a to nejen obecně, ale i pomocí příkladů v Německu a USA. Další části práce se zabývají charakteristikou města Ostravy. Zahrnují historický vývoj města i jeho soudobý popis. Pozornost je věnovaná obyvatelstvu Ostravy, zejména jeho vývoji a přirozenému pohybu. Práci uzavírá charakteristika města z hlediska zaměstnanosti a stavu bytového fondu. Cílem práce je na základě zvolených demografických údajů posoudit, zdali je možné Ostravu považovat za „shrinking city“.

Abstract:

The subject of the bachelor thesis is an analysis of the concept “shrinking cities” and the application on the city of Ostrava. In the first part, we define the concept “shrinking cities”, not only in general, but we describe the situation in Germany and the United States. In the next parts, we deal with the characteristic of Ostrava. These parts contain the historical development and contemporary description of Ostrava. Attention is paid to the population of Ostrava, mainly to the development and the natural changes. The thesis in concluded by the employment and residential characteristic of the city. The aim of this study is conclude, on the basis of the selected demographic indicators, whether Ostrava can be considered as “shrinking city” or not.
