The aim of my thesis was to follow the development of Harriet Vane in Sayers’s detective novels. I explained the social changes which led to the emergence of the “new young woman” in the 1920s. I highlighted the similarities in Harriet’s and Sayers’s life and work because Harriet Vane is generally viewed as the author’s alter ego.
