Double Narrative in Brian Castro's Birds of Passage

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá první novelou Briana Castra Birds of Passage. Castro, jakožto postmoderní autor, staví svou novelu na hře se čtenářem. Využívá různých strategií, aby poukázal na propojení dvou dějových linek příběhu. V první části se práce zabývá strukturou knihy, která je důležitou součástí Castrovy strategie. V knize figurují dva vypravěči, kteří jsou současně hlavními postavami - Shan si píše deník a Seamus vypráví svůj příběh a současně překládá Shanův deník. Využitím dvojitého vyprávění Castro dějové linky propojuje. Předmětem první části studie je také analýza vlivu skutečných historických událostí a přepisů externích materiálů na hodnověrnost vypravování. Práce přirovnává četbu knihy k Seamusově četbě Shanova deníku – zdůrazňována je především podobnost na základě úlomkovitého vypravování. Druhá část studie je zaměřena na rozbor způsobů, které Castro využil k vytvoření a znázornění propojenosti dvou dějových linek příběhu. Součástí Castrovy strategie je především pojmenování postav v obou dějových linkách stejnými jmény, stejně tak jako zasazení postav do velmi podobných situací, což vyvolává pocit déjà vu. Dalšími metodami propojování dějových linek je zapojení náhod a také emocí hrdinů, které pomáhají osvětlit některé situace příběhu. Vrcholem propojenosti linek je jakési magické setkání Shana a Seamuse, které dělí sto dvacet let. Ve své práci argumentuji, že Castro poukazuje na spojitost mezi hlavními postavami Seamusem a Shanem, která je založena na vztahu mezi autorem a čtenářem. Castro se ovšem také snaží zmást své čtenáře, aby uvěřili příbuzenskému vztahu mezi těmito postavami – teorii prosazované Seamusem. Tím se Castrovi daří napomoci čtenářům lépe se ztotožnit s jednou z hlavních postav.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the first novel of Brian Castro Birds of Passage. Castro, as a postmodernist author, bases his novel on the game with the readers. He uses many different strategies in order to show the interconnection of the two storylines, which are narrated by two protagonists Seamus and Shan. The study examines the structure of the story, which is an important part of Castro’s strategy. Castro employs a double narration of the two main characters – Shan is writing his journal and Seamus is telling his story and translating Shan’s journal. Castro uses the double narration to interconnect the storylines. The first part of the study also focuses on the analysis of the employment of the historical events and the transcriptions of the external materials and their influence on the reliability of the narration. Reading of the book is compared to Seamus’ reading Shan’s journal as both processes are based on the fragmentary narration. The second chapter examines the ways Castro uses to create and demonstrate the interconnection between the storylines. Creating a sense of déjà-vu is a part of Castro’s scheme based on the fact that some characters from both storylines carry the same names as well as that the protagonists experience very similar situations. Among other methods of his strategy an incorporation of coincidences and also emotions explaining the story can be named. The peak of the interconnection is the meeting of the characters across a hundred and twenty years. I argue, that Castro wants to prove that there is a relationship between the characters based on the relationship between the reader and the author. However, he tries to confuse the readers so that they believe that Shan and Seamus are relatives, which is what Seamus believes, and thus the author enables the readers to empathize with one of the protagonists.
