Microfinance institutions, remittances and their role in developing the countries of the global South

Abstract:

Cílem práce je odhalit vztah mezi remitancemi, mikrofinančními institucemi a rozvojem, následně poukázat na pozitiva/negativa, která s sebou přináší fenomén remitančních služeb mikrofinančních institucí. Remitance se v posledních letech staly jedním z nejdůležitějších zdrojů finančních prostředků pro velkou část světa. Každoročně pošlou zahraniční pracovníci zpět do své země původu několik miliard amerických dolarů. Mikrofinanční instituce mají zajistit chudým lidem především ve venkovských oblastech přístup k finančním službám. Jsou založeny na principu poskytování drobných finančních služeb, tím se má na mysli například poskytování malých úvěrů. Právě tyto instituce v posledních letech rozšířily svoji nabídku i o tzv. remitanční služby. Spořící programy a různé investiční nástroje MFIs jsou speciálně navržené tak, aby vyhovovaly rizikovým profilům zahraničních pracovníků, kteří posílají část svých výdělků zpět do země původu. První část práce se zaobírá obecně problematikou MFIs, remitancí a remitančních služeb. Druhá část aplikuje získané znalosti z první části konkrétně na případ Bangladéše. Závěr shrnuje získané postřehy a a výsledek toho, zda se podařilo průběhem práce dosáhnout zvoleného cíle.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on microfinance institutions and remittances and the relationship with development of countries of global South. In recent years remittances become one of the most important financial resources for a large part of the world. In countries of the global South we can also find people who have very limited access to the traditional form of commercial banking. To ensure poor people, especially living in rural areas, access to financial services were created microfinance institutions that provide small financial services. Some of these institutions expanded their range of services related to migration and remittances. The aim of this thesis is to reveal the relationship between remittances, microfinance institutions and development, and then point out the positives/negatives, which brings with it the phenomenon of remittances services of microfinance institutions. To achieve the declared objective will be verified that remitance can affect GDP growth, which could then cause a change in the value of the HDI. To verify this proposition will serve a case study that focuses on this phenomenon in Bangladesh.
