Morphometry of the meatus acusticus internus on computed tomography

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá ověřením některých předpokladů metod pro odhad pohlaví na základě velikosti tzv. laterálního úhlu pyramidy spánkové kosti. Dimorfismu laterálního úhlu využívají některé metody pro odhad pohlaví. Sexuální dimorfismus rozměrů a úhlů v oblasti vnitřního zvukovodu byl testován na 105 spánkových kostech z 5 archeologických lokalit a navržené varianty laterálního úhlu měly skutečně trend dimorfismu odpovídající předchozím studiím. Na základě záznamu z počítačové tomografie byla každá kost vymodelována v programu ITK-SNAP a na povrch virtuálního modelu byly v programu 3D Slicer umístěny landmarky, které daly základ pro měření úhlů i vzdáleností. Všechny proměnné pak byly sloučeny v souboru TPS a v programu RStudio byla testována statistická významnost mezipohlavních rozdílů daných znaků. Výsledky práce ukazují, že rozdíl mezi muži a ženami ve sledovaných znacích skutečně existuje, ale je slabý a ve většině znaků není statisticky významný. Hodnoty úhlů žen (s výjimkou jediného testovaného úhlu) jsou průměrně větší, než u mužů. Bylo testováno i několik lineárních rozměrů kosti, které jsou u žen průměrně menší, než u mužů. Zjištěné rozdíly jsou tedy velmi malé, což zhoršuje využitelnost metody.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the verification of some assumptions of methods for sex estimation based on the size of the lateral angle of the pars petrosa ossis temporalis. Lateral angle dimorphism is used by some sex estimation methods. Sexual dimorphism of distances and angles in the region of the internal auditory canal was tested on 105 temporal bones from 5 archeological sites, and the proposed lateral angle variants indeed had a trend of dimorphism consistent with previous studies. Based on the computer tomography recording, each bone was modeled in the ITKSNAP program, and landmarks were placed on the surface of the virtual model in the 3D Slicer program, which provided the basis for measuring angles and distances. All variables were then combinated to the .TPS file and the statistical significance of intersex characters was tested in the RStudio program. The results of the work shows that the diffrence between men and women in the observed traits does really exists, but not statistically significant. The values of women’s angles (with the exception of the only one tested angle) are on average larger than those of men. Several bone distances were also tested, which are on average smaller in women than in men. The detected differences are therefore very small, which impairs the usability of the method.
