Public urban space on the border of place and non-place

Abstract:

Hlavním předmětem zájmu mé diplomové práce je veřejný městský prostor čerpacích stanic. Klíčovou teoretickou oporou práce je dílo Non-places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity, jehož autorem je Marc Augé. Podle jeho teorie jsou prostory čerpacích stanic typickým ne-místem a stojí v opozici k antropologickým místům. Ne-místa jsou produktem postmodernity, jedná se o odosobněné prostory navzájem anonymních aktérů, ve kterých nevznikají žádné sociální vazby, identita ani se zde neutváří historie. Vlastní text práce se skládá ze tří částí, teoretické, metodologické a výzkumné. V teoretické části se věnuji historickému vývoji konceptu prostoru. Dále vymezuji kategorie prostoru, sociální konstrukci prostoru a věnuji se členění prostoru na veřejný a soukromý a popisuji rozdíly mezi prostorem a místem. V závěru této kapitoly se pak věnuji teorii místa a ne-místa. V další části práce se věnuji metodologii výzkumu. Při vlastním výzkumu jsem prováděla zúčastněné pozorování a zaměřila se na žitou sociální praxi. S jedinci jejich jednání nebylo ve shodě s pojetím ne-místa, byly dále realizovány polostrukturované rozhovory. Ve výzkumné části práce, čerpám z poznatků získaných během terénního šetření a věnuji se deskripci reálného prostoru čerpacích stanic. Popisuji pozorované jednání typické pro ne-místa a místa. V závěru představuji jednotlivé kategorie aktéru, jejichž chování odpovídá místům a přibližuji skrze aktérskou perspektivu žitou realitu čerpacích stanic v optice kategorie místa.

Abstract:

The main subject of my thesis is focus on the public urban space of petrol stations. The key theoretical support of the thesis is a publication Non-places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity, written by Marc Augé. According to his theory, space of petrol stations is typical not-place and stands in opposition to the anthropological place. Non-places are the product of postmodernity. They are spaces of actors anonymized of each other; in which there are created no social bonds, identity or the history. The text of the work consists of three parts, theoretical, methodological and research. In the theoretical part I present the historical development of the concept of space. Furthermore, I define categories of space, social construction of space and I present the division of the space to a public and private space, and I describe the differences between space and place. The end of this chapter, I devote to theory of places and non-places. In the next part of the work is devoted to the methodology of the research. During research work, I did the participating observation and focused on living social practice with individuals, whose actions weren't in accordance with the concept of non-places, and I conducted semi-structured interviews with them. In the research section of the work, I drew from the knowledge obtained during the field investigation, and I described real space stations. I describe the observed actions typical for non-places and places. In the end, I present to each category of stakeholders whose behavior is corresponding to places and I describe the actor's perspective the living reality of the petrol stations in the perspective of the place.
