An Evolutionary-Psychological Approach to Depressive Disorder

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se snaží představit evolučně psychologický pohled na depresivní poruchu (depresi). Východiskem naší teoretické práce je popis základů evoluční psychologie, obzvláště pokroku v evoluční biologii. Dále se věnujeme aplikaci evolučně psychologického přístupu na oblast psychopatologie (evoluční psychopatologie) a řešíme důležité konceptuální, epidemiologické a genetické souvislosti deprese. Stěžejní část textu se věnuje podrobné analýze a zhodnocení dvou evolučně psychologických teorií deprese: Hypotézy sociální navigace a Hypotézy sociálního rizika. Snažíme se identifikovat podobnosti a rozdíly a společné problémy teorií. Zkoušíme a nakonec hodnotíme tři metody klasifikace evolučně psychologických teorií deprese. Srovnáváme obě teorie s „ideálním“ profilem evolučně psychologické teorie. V diskuzi navrhujeme způsoby překonání problémů teorií a empirického testování obou teorií.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to introduce evolutionary-psychological approach to depressive disorder (depression). Our theoretical study is based on description of foundations of evolutionary psychology, especially progress in evolutionary biology. Furthermore we attend to the application of evolutionary-psychological approach to psychopathology (evolutionary psychopathology) and we deal with important conceptual, epidemiological and genetic issues of depression. Fundamental part of our text is dedicated to elaborate analysis and evaluation of two evolutionary-psychological theories of depression namely Social navigation hypothesis and Social risk hypothesis. We are trying to identify similarities and differences and common problems of theories. We are testing and finally evaluating three methods of classification of evolutionary-psychological theories of depression. We are comparing both theories to "ideal" evolutionary-psychology theory profile. In discussion we suggest several ways to overcome problems of theories and to test both theories empirically.
