Senescence and old Age in Czech Literature of the pre-White Mountain period

Abstract:

Práce je věnována recepci stáří a starého věku v česky psané literatuře doby předbělohorské. Větší část pramenné základny tvoří staré tisky z průběhu 16. a počátku 17. století s moralistní, kratochvilnou, satirickou a lékařskou tematikou. Pozornost je nejprve věnována periodizaci lidského života na prahu raného novověku tradičním schématům "věků člověka". Jádro práce představují kapitoly zaměřené na společenský status starého člověka, fyziologické proměny starého věku a etické aspekty stáří. Vliv stáří na sociální postavení jedince je pojednán v kontextu životního cyklu. Kapitola reflektující tělesné proměny stáří přináší také náhled do problematiky zasazení člověka do dobové kosmologie prostřednictvím nauky o mikro/makrokosmu. Přiblíženo je také specifické vnímání staré ženy autory raně novověkých textů. Práce je uzavřena krátkým exkurzem do problematiky posledních věcí člověka.

Abstract:

This master's thesis is dedicated to the reception of old age and senescence in Czech literature of the pre-White Mountain period. Most of the sources are prints from the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. The thesis introduces the traditional periodization of life through the "Ages of man" or "Ages of life" schemes. The main part focuses on the social aspects, physiological changes and ethical dimension of aging and old age in the early modern age. The social status of an old man is described in the context of a whole life cycle. The chapter dedicated to the reflexion of old body contains, inter alia, a part about the microcosm idea the conception of men as a miniature cosmos. Attention was also paid to a specific view on old women in this period. In conclusion, the issue of contemporary eschatology is described.
