Železnice jsou nedílnou součástí ekonomik většiny zemí. V průběhu času narůstal zájem o průzkum efektivnosti železnic a jejich reformování kvůli významnému poklesu podílu na dopravním trhu a stagnaci železničního sektoru samotného.
