Opinions and attitudes of seniors to euthanasia

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to summarize currently available knowledge about euthanasia and learn the opinions and attitudes of seniors towards it. In this work, we used one-dimensional descriptive statistics with the goal of creating an overview of gained data, and inductive statistics for testing of the statistical hypotheses. The analysis of the results has shown that the seniors do know the term 'euthanasia' (95,98 %). They connect euthanasia with help to those in pain. In their opinion, the main reasons for euthanasia would be unbearable pains and loss of human dignity. In case of legalization of euthanasia, they would be afraid of its abuse by doctors and they would neither undergo euthanasia, nor recommend it, nor allow their loved ones to undergo it. Religious respondents have a more disapproving attitude towards the legalization of euthanasia than atheists. If they needed to choose between euthanasia and palliative care, 59,29 % of seniors would choose the palliative care. At the end of the work, we give recommendation for practice, with the aim of increasing of the level of awareness of seniors about euthanasia in confrontation with palliative care as an alternative of a dignified end of life.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce bolo zosumarizovať súčasné poznatky o eutanázii a zistiť názory a postoje seniorov k nej. V práci sme použili deskriptívnu jednorozmernú štatistiku, ktorej úlohou bolo vytvoriť prehľad o získaných údajoch a induktívnu štatistiku, ktorej cieľom bolo testovanie štatistických hypotéz. Z analýzy výsledkov nám vyplynulo, že seniori poznajú pojem eutanázia (95,98 %). Eutanáziu si spájajú s termínom pomoc trpiacim. Hlavnými dôvodmi k eutanázii z ich pohľadu by boli neznesiteľné bolesti a strata ľudskej dôstojnosti. V prípade legalizácie eutanázie by sa báli zneužitia lekárom a eutanáziu by nepodstúpili, ale ani neodporučili, či nedovolili podstúpiť svojím blízkym. Veriaci respondenti majú odmietavejší postoj k legalizácií eutanázie ako neveriaci respondenti. Pokiaľ by si mali zvoliť medzi eutanáziou a paliatívnou starostlivosťou, 59,29 % seniorov by si zvolilo paliatívnu starostlivosť. V závere práce stanovuje odporúčania pre prax, ktorých cieľom je zvýšiť povedomie informovanosti seniorov o eutanázii v konfrontácii s paliatívnou starostlivosťou ako s alternatívou dôstojného ukončenia života.
