Tim Burton´s Film Adaptation of Washington Irving´s "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"

Abstract:

The first part of this thesis is about gothic horror literature, its development, and different types of horror. The main part is about differences between the short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving and its movie version "Sleepy Hollow" by Tim Burton. Each type of media has its approach to the material and each resonates with people differently. With textual analysis and film criticism, the research explores how these differences contribute to differing audience experiences and interpretations of the Sleepy Hollow legend. By delving into the complexity of adaptation and storytelling across mediums, this study sheds light on the complexities of transforming literature into film while offering insights into the creative processes of adaptation and audience reception. Through comparative analysis, this study investigates the divergences in narrative structure, character development, and thematic elements between the original literary work and its cinematic interpretation. By examining some elements of film adaptation and short story this research breaks down the different artistic choices made by filmmakers when adapting textual narratives into visual narratives. Behind every filmmaker, there is an inspiration, that can be seen in the final image. The last part of this thesis is explains how Tim Burton's obsession with horror started, who was his inspiration, and how his work developed.

Abstract:

První část této práce je o gotické hororové literatuře, jejím vývoji a různých typech hororů. Hlavní část je o rozdílech mezi povídkou "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" od Washingtona Irvinga a její filmovou verzí "Sleepy Hollow" od Tima Burtona. Každý typ média má svůj vlastní přístup k materiálu a každé s lidmi rezonuje jinak. Výzkum pomocí textové analýzy a filmové kritiky zkoumá, jak tyto rozdíly přispívají k různým diváckým zkušenostem a interpretacím legendy Sleepy Hollow. Ponořením se do složitosti adaptace a vyprávění napříč médii tato studie vrhá světlo na složitost transformace literatury do filmu a zároveň nabízí vhled do tvůrčích procesů adaptace a divácké recepce. Prostřednictvím srovnávací analýzy tato studie zkoumá rozdíly ve struktuře vyprávění, vývoji postav a tematických prvcích mezi původním literárním dílem a jeho filmovou interpretací. Zkoumáním některých prvků filmové adaptace a povídky tento výzkum rozbíjí různá umělecká rozhodnutí, která dělají filmaři při adaptaci textových narativů na vyprávění vizuální. Za každým filmařem se skrývá inspirace, která je vidět na výsledném snímku. V poslední části této práce je vysvětleno, jak začala posedlost Tima Burtona hororem, kdo byl jeho inspirací a jak se jeho tvorba vyvíjela.
