Humanistic Oriented Documentary Photography of Rudolf Stursa and His Creative Aesthetics

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Humanistická dokumentární fotografie Rudolfa Štursy a jeho tvůrčí estetika představuje brněnského fotografa Rudolfa Štursu jako autora soustředícího se na dokumentární zobrazení událostí v souvztažnosti s estetickými kategoriemi krásy, komična, ale i absurdity a tragiky lidského údělu. Štursův poetický rukopis utvářený takzvanou humanisticky orientovanou fotografií práce nahlíží v rozpětí padesátých až osmdesátých let 20. století, a to s ohledem na inspirační zdroje a osobnosti, které Štursu ovlivnily. Patřil k nim český chemik a fotograf Jan Lauschmann, fotograf a filmař Jiří Jeníček, a především francouzský fotograf považovaný za zakladatele moderní fotožurnalistiky Henri Cartier-Bresson. Předurčující pro Štursův autorský rukopis bylo též rozhodnutí fotografovat jako jeden z prvních českých fotografů na kinofilm, a to právě po vzoru Cartier-Bressona. Výrazně Štursu ovlivnil i spisovatel Jaromír Tomeček. Jeho prózy zachycují Podkarpatskou Rus, oblast, kde se Štursa v roce 1927 narodil a kde se formovala jeho estetická východiska. Zdůrazněn je morální apel a význam symbolických sdělení zakódovaných ve Štursových snímcích: nejen v rozvrstvení jednotlivých tématických cyklů, ale i na pozadí let padesátých a šedesátých, kdy komunistická diktatura potírala humanisticky orientovanou fotografii jako nehodnou socialistického zřízení. Součástí práce jsou rozhovory s Rudolfem Štursou, Štursovými současníky a teoretiky fotografie, dále text doplňují reprodukce fotografií, osobní korespondence a další pozoruhodné materiály ze Štursova soukromého archivu. Většinu z nich autor svolil reprodukovat vůbec poprvé.

Abstract:

The thesis Humanistic Oriented Documentary Photopraphy of Rudolf Stursa and His Creative Aesthetics presents the Brno-based photographer Rudolf Stursa as an author focused on documentary representation of events in correlation with aesthetic categories of beauty, comedy, but also absurdity and tragedy of human destiny. In inspects Stursa's poetic touch shaped by humanistic oriented photography of work between 1950s and 1980s, with respect to the sources of inspiration and personalities that formed Stursa. They included the Czech chemist and photographer Jan Lauschmann, photographer and filmmaker Jiri Jenicek, and especially French photographer considered the founder of modern photojournalism, Henri Cartier-Bresson. Determining for Stursa's style was also the decision to use 35 mm film as one of the first Czech photographers, inspired by Cartier-Bresson. Stursa was also significantly influenced by the writer Jaromir Tomecek. His prose depicts Carpathian Ruthenia, the area where Stursa was born in 1927 and where his aesthetic principles were formed. There is emphasis on moral appeal and significance of symbolic messages encoded in Stursa's pictures: not only in the stratification of individual thematic cycles, but also in the background of the 1950s and 1960s, when the communist dictatorship attacked humanistic oriented photography as unworthy of the socialist system. The work also contains interviews with Rudolf Stursa, his contemporaries and photography theorists and the text is supplemented by photo-reproductions, personal correspondence and other notable materials from Stusa's private archive. The author consented to reproduce most of them for the first time.
