The phenomenon of negation and its psychological contexts: text based study

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá kvantitativní analýzou českého textu zaměřenou na výskyt lingvistického fenoménu negace u depresivních osob. Cílem práce je pomocí morfologické analýzy explorativně ověřit rozdíly v užívání specifických morfologických markerů u depresivních a nedepresivních osob v různých typech textu a zachytit možné souvislosti s osobnostními charakteristikami pisatelů. Studie je součástí výzkumného projektu „Komputační psycholingvistická analýza českého textu“ (CPACT). Výzkumný soubor je tvořen skupinou 72 osob ve věku od 20 do 72 let s diagnózou afektivní poruchy – deprese a fobické úzkostné poruchy nebo kombinovanou. Participanti napsali 4 různé typy textů (formální a neformání) a vyplnili dotazníky. Pro účely výzkumu je definováno několik lingvistických proměnných, které zachycují různé formy výskytu negace. Psychologické proměnné jsou syceny dvěma administrovanými dotazníky (BFI-44 a DASS-21). Výsledky ukazují, že aktuálně depresivní jedinci zvýšenou měrou používají negační prefix na slovese v 1. os. sg. a 1. os. pl. a obecnou slovesnou negaci. Zvýšené užívání různých typů negace je obecně spojeno s vyšší mírou neuroticismu, ale vzájemné vztahy vykazovaly i další dimenze pětifaktorového modelu osobnosti. V rámci neformálního textu byly nalezené korelace mezi proměnnými vyšší.

Abstract:

Thesis deals with a quantitative analysis of czech text profiling the parameters of the negation phenomena usage in depressive patients. Main goal is to exploratively mark the differences in using specific morphological markers among clinical polulation and put them into context with personality traits using morphological analysis. This study is a part of the research project „Computational Psycholinguistic Analysis of Czech Text“ (CPACT). The research file consists of 72 participants aged between 20 and 72 years with diagnosis of affective disorder – depression and phobic anxiety disorder or combined. Participants wrote 4 different texts (formal and informal) and filled the questionaries. Several linguistic variables are defined reflecting the specific forms of negation. Two questionnaires (BFI-44 and DASS-21) are used to obtain the psychological characteristics of the writers. The results show that the actual depressed patients use verbs in 1. p. sg. and 1. p. pl. as well as the words in negative form more than controls. The high usage of negative prefix is also linked to increased neuroticism and other dimensions of the five factor personality model. Measured features are found mostly in informal written texts.
