Experience of the body and difference: the image of queer identity in new-media art

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou queer identit ve vztahu k novo-mediální teorii a umělecké praxi s důrazem na disciplínu performance art a digitální fotografii. Klíčovým pojmem a úhlem pohledu je performativita (od významu procesuality či proměnlivosti po performativ, performance atd.), která spojuje celou práci v hledání interpretací různých způsobů pojetí těla (tělo-zvíře, tělo-stroj, tragicko-melancholické, karnevalové, fantastické, snové a virtuální tělo). Práce je rozdělena do pěti kapitol, nejdříve se zabývá dekonstrukcí jazyka ve vztahu k možnostem proměny pojetí identity (rolí), poté se přes koncepty posthumanismu jako východiska pro možnost odlišné identity a postfeministickou teorii dostává k teorii performance art, kterou jsme zvolili jako pro naše účely vhodný vyjadřovací prostředek. Vztahu fyzického a digitálního těla s otázkou genderu a queer identit ve světě internetu se věnujeme v kapitole poslední, přičemž digitální prostředí pojímáme jako paralelu k postmoderně filosofickým a posthumanistickým záštitám (tělo bez orgánů, „člověk-zvíře“, kyborg). Každé téma jsme zpracovali jako teoretický problém a poté ho ilustrovali na příkladech konkrétních uměleckých děl. Kritériem výběru konkrétních uměleckých projektů bylo hledisko autentické výpovědi, jež je pro nás stěžejní při hledání pravdy, kterou jsme se pokusili najít také v přehnané teatralitě, typické pro queer umění (drag shows) či manipulované fotografii (morfing).

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of queer identities in relation to the new-media art theory and practice, with the emphasis on discipline performance art and digital photography. The key term and the angle of view is performativity (meaning from procesuality or variability to the performativ, performance, etc.) which connects all work in different ways of interpreting the concept of body (body-animal, body-machine, tragic-melancholic, carnival, fantastic, dreamy and virtual body). The work is divided into five chapters, the first one deals with the deconstruction of language in relation to the possibility of transforming the concept of identity (roles), then through posthumanism concepts as a basis for the possibility of a different identity and postfeminist theory gets to the theory of performance art that we chose for our purposes as suitable means of expression. Relationship of the physical and digital body with the issue of gender and queer identity in the internet world is covered in the last chapter, the digital environment can be seen here as a parallel to the postmodern philosophical and posthumanist auspices (body without organs, „body-animal”, cyborg). Each topic we worked out as a theoretical problem and then illustrated it with examples of specific works of art. The criterion for the selection of specific art projects was a view of authentic testimony which is most important for us in the search for truth which we tried to find also in exaggerated theatricality, typical for queer art (drag shows) or manipulated photography (morphing).
