Structural and social changes in film industry between Second Republic and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá změnami ve filmovém průmyslu mezi druhou republikou a Protektorátem Čechy a Morava. Hlavním cílem je zaměřit se na první polovinu okupace a poukázat na vývoj, který transformoval struktury filmového průmyslu na úrovni výroby, distribuce a uvádění. Další součástí práce je případová studie zaměřená na Miloše Havla, který byl v průběhu třicátých let nejvýraznější osobností filmového průmyslu. Případová studie má za cíl poukázat na jeho pozici ve třicátých letech a následně zkoumat, jak se jeho možnosti v tomto proměňujícím se prostředí měnily a jak dokázal udržovat svoje postavení. Pro širší pochopení hlavního tématu je také důležité vysvětlit transformaci kulturních hodnot za druhé republiky, funkci státních filmových institucí, česko-německé vztahy a pozici české vlády za okupace. K vysvětlení těchto témat využívám koncept uvažování založený na zkoumání strukturní a sociální transformace od Williama H. Sewella, který slouží k vysvětlení toho, jak ke změnám struktur docházelo, co je brzdilo a jaký měly dopad. Doplňkovým textem je poté studie Tatjany Tonsmeyer, která se zabývá sociální transformací okupovaných společností.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis explores the changes in the film industry between the period of The Second Czechoslovak Republic and Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The main aim is to focus on the first half of the occupation and to point out the advancement, which transformed structures of film industry in the terms of production, distribution, cinema and its screenings. Other part of the thesis is a case study of Miloš Havel who in the thirties was the most substantial figure of the film industry. The case study’s aim is to highlight his position in the thirties, to subsequently examine how his opportunities kept changing in this inconstant environment and how he kept his position. For broader understanding of the main topic, it is important to explain the transformation of culture values in The Second Czechoslovak Republic, function of state film institutions, Czech-German relations and position of Czech government during occupation. To better explain these themes, thesis uses a concept based on examination of structural and social transformation by William H. Sewell, which serves as an explanation for how the social structures have changed, what hampered them and what was the impact. Supplementary text is a study by Tatjana Tonsmeyer, which is focused on social transformation of societies under occupation.
