The transformation of the image of Russia and the Soviet Union in Czech history textbooks

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá proměnou obrazu Ruska a Sovětského svazu v českých učebnicích dějepisu v průběhu 20. století. Práce analyzuje učebnice z období první republiky (1918-1938), komunistického režimu (1948-1989) a moderní doby (po roce 1989). Cílem je identifikovat hlavní narativy, klíčová témata a ideologické vlivy, které formovaly prezentaci Ruska a SSSR v různých obdobích. Analýza odhaluje, že obraz Ruska a SSSR se v učebnicích výrazně měnil v závislosti na politickém kontextu a ideologickém zaměření doby. Zatímco prvorepublikové učebnice se snažily o relativně objektivní pohled, komunistické učebnice prezentovaly Rusko a SSSR v ideologickém rámci marxismu- leninismu, zdůrazňovaly úspěchy sovětského systému a bagatelizovaly jeho negativní stránky. Moderní učebnice se snaží o vyváženější a kritičtější přístup, ale i tak se nevyhnuly vzácnému ideologickému zabarvení

Abstract:

This thesis examines the transformation of the image of Russia and the Soviet Union in Czech history textbooks throughout the 20th century. The work analyzes textbooks from the period of the First Republic (1918-1938), the communist regime (1948-1989), and the modern era (after 1989). The aim is to identify the main narratives, key themes, and ideological influences that shaped the presentation of Russia and the USSR in different periods. The analysis reveals that the image of Russia and the USSR changed significantly in textbooks depending on the political context and ideological orientation of the time. While the textbooks of the First Republic strived for a relatively objective view, the communist textbooks presented Russia and the USSR within the ideological framework of Marxism- Leninism, emphasizing the successes of the Soviet system and downplaying its negative aspects. Modern textbooks strive for a more balanced and critical approach but have not avoided rare ideological biases.
