CouchSurfing: between banal nationalism and banal cosmopolitanism

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá podobami a mechanismy reprodukce fenoménů banálního nacionalismu a banálního kosmopolitismu na vzorku uživatelů sociální sítě poskytující pohostinství CouchSurfing.org v Brně. Autorka vychází z Billigova pojetí banálního nacionalismu, Haldrupovy typologie banálního kosmopolitismu a všímá si jejich vzájemné provázanosti při interakci CouchSurferů s ohledem na turistickou praxi hledání autenticity a efektu zírání podle konceptu tourist gaze od Johna Urryho. Ukazuje, jak na základě habitualizace praktik vzniká rétorická distance mezi hostitelem a hostem v performance banálního nacionalismu a kosmopolitismu. Empirická část práce spočívá v etnografickém výzkumu podle Hammersley a Atkinson, který je realizován ve třech rovinách: ve výpovědi CouchSurferů o jejich zkušenostech s hosty ze zahraničí a z pozice býti hoštěn v zahraničí, v retrospektivní analýze praktik vlastního počínání z pozice hostitelky a v participativním pozorování hostů a hostitelů během návštěvy. Navzdory tvrzení, že nacionální struktury vnímání pozbývají v postmoderní společnosti úpadku národních států svůj význam, ukazuje, že i skrze komunitu CouchSurferů, jejíž projektová identita se zakládá na kosmopolitním hledisku, stále nacházejí svou odezvu.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the forms and mechanisms of the reproduction of the social phenomenon of banal nationalism and banal cosmopolitanism on the sample of the users of the social network providing hospitality in CouchSurfing.org in the city of Brno. The author uses Billig´s concept of banal nationalism and Haldrup´s typology of banal cosmopolitanism and she links them together with the tourist practice of the search for authenticity and tourist gaze from John Urry when CouchSurfers interact with each other. She shows how habitualization creates rhetorical distance between the host and his guest in the performance of banal nationalism and banal cosmopolitanism. The empirical part of the thesis derives from Hammersley and Atkinson´s principles of ethnography, doing research in three levels: The level of the CouchSurfers´ affirmation of their experience with the foreign guests and from the position of the one who is being hosted abroad, in retrospective analysis of the hostess´ own activities and in the participative observation of the guests and hosts during CouchSurfers´ visit. Despite the claim that national structures of perception have been losing their meaning in the postmodernist society of declining national states, it shows that even through the CouchSurfers community, whose project identity is based on cosmopolitan standpoint, they still meet with their response.
