Eric Voegelin and Leo Strauss. The Analysis of the Relation between Politics and Religion (An Outline of the Concept of Political Philosophy for the Political Science)

Abstract:

Many political phenomena and affairs originate from religious source. The fact of the impact of religious experience on political realm should not be overlooked. The main objective of our dissertation is to elaborate on this phenomenon from the philosophical and scientific point of view. The text is only a brief outline of the philosophical and theoretical concept of this problem and does not provide definite answers to the question of the political-religious relation. The theoretical part of the dissertation is based on the philosophical concept of Eric Voegelin who had analyzed the problems of politics, particularly the problems of the ideological and totalitarian movements in 20th century. Voegelin’s thesis, that is substantial for us, proclaims connection between politics and religion. Another concept which is useful in our effort is the political philosophy of Leo Strauss who, in a similar way as Voegelin, had analyzed the problems of political phenomena but contrary to Voegelin, Strauss perceives the politics and religion as two antagonistic poles, which do not have anything common. Both of them in their endeavors turn their attention to the study of the classical philosophy with the aim to restore the principles of classical political philosophy because in these principles they see the invaluable instrument for the rebuilding of the political science. This is our second main objective because we want to prove that political philosophy is the very important and useful component for the political science. The dichotomy between philosophical concepts of Strauss and Voegelin is evident. That was our aim to indicate the difference because only then we can see where the importance of political philosophy resides. In spite of the fact that Eric Voegelin and Leo Strauss had different approach to the relation between politics and religion, and their views were distinctive, both had one common motive – return to the study of the sources of ancient and European thoughts, to the origins from which European and, in general, Western civilization arose.

Abstract:

Mnohé politické fenomény a udalosti majú svoj pôvod v religiozite. Skutočnosť vplyvu náboženskej skúsenosti na politickú oblasť nemožno prehliadať. Cieľom dizertačnej práce je preskúmať tento jav z filozofického a vedeckého hľadiska. Napriek nášmu úsiliu, práca zostáva len v rovine stručného filozoficko-teoretického náčrtu tohto problému a neposkytuje žiadne definitívne odpovede problematiky vzťahu medzi politickou a religióznou oblasťou. Teoretická časť našej práce vychádza z filozofického konceptu Erica Voegelina, ktorý okrem iného analyzoval problematiku ideologických a totalitárnych hnutí 20. storočia. Voegelinova téza, ktorá je v kontexte nášho výskumu podstatná, ukazuje na spojitosť medzi politikou a religiozitou. Ďalším dôležitým konceptom pre nás zostáva politická filozofia Leo Straussa ktorý, podobne ako Voegelin, analyzoval problémy politických fenoménov, avšak na rozdiel od Voegelina ponímal oblasť politiky a religiozity ako dva antagonistické póly, ktoré nemajú nič spoločné. Obaja sústredili svoju pozornosť na štúdium klasickej filozofie s cieľom obnoviť princípy klasickej politickej filozofie, pretože tieto princípy považovali za neoceniteľný nástroj pre politickú vedu. A to je zároveň druhým hlavným cieľom našej práce, chceme totiž ukázať, že politická filozofia je veľmi dôležitým a užitočným prvkom politickej vedy. Rozdiel medzi filozofickým konceptom Straussa a Voegelina je zrejmý. Našim zámerom bolo ukázať práve na tejto odlišnosti v čom spočíva význam politickej filozofie. Napriek skutočnosti, že Eric Voegelin a Leo Strauss mali rozdielny prístup k vzťahu medzi politikou a náboženstvom, pričom ich pohľady boli špecifické, obaja mali jeden spoločný motív, a tým bol návrat k štúdiu prameňov starovekého a európskeho myslenia, k počiatkom z ktorých európska a celkovo západná civilizácia vznikla.
