Impacts of the 2017-2022 global drought episodes on selected agricultural crops

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá globální analýzou dopadů sucha na vybrané zemědělské plodiny v období let 2017–2022, zhodnocením pravděpodobnosti míry ohrožení těchto plodin během nejvýznamnějších suchých epizod a jejich časoprostorových odlišností. V závěrečné diskusi je zhodnocen možný vliv suchých epizod na ceny klíčových zemědělských komodit. Zároveň jsou porovnány rozdílné dopady suchých epizod u hlavních světových exportérů těchto komodit s oblastmi, které se specializují na vysokou produkci pro vlastní potřebu. Výčet všech zasažených států je vytvořen propojením data setů klimatických modelů SoilClim a mHM podle čtyřiceti států s nejvyšší produkcí a sklizenou plochou daných plodin. Výčet států představuje základ pro výpočet podílu zasažené plochy suchem a stanovení aritmetického průměru a směrodatné odchylky výnosů daných plodin. Podíly, aritmetický průměr a směrodatná odchylka jsou vypočteny pomocí funkcí programu MS Excel. Pro určení pravděpodobnosti míry ohrožení plodin, časoprostorového odlišení a testování hypotézy je pro zpřesnění výsledků vybrána podmnožina států se zásahem plochy suchem nad 50 %. Pro určení výše míry ohrožení jsou stanoveny čtyři prahové hodnoty dle podílu zásahu u této podmnožiny. Testování hypotézy je provede-no odečtením výnosů metodou n-1 u velkých epizod sucha pro každý významně zasažený stát a jeho typickou plodinu. Nulová hypotéza práce spočívá v neprokazatelnosti rozdílných vlivů sucha na produkci zemědělských plodin mezi regiony a plodinami. Zpracování a vyhodnocení dat je uvedeno pomocí tabulek a grafů. Provedeným výzkumem je zjištěno, že historicky sucha nejvíce postihují Asii a Afriku, ve zkoumaném šestiletém období je nejvíce zasažena Evropa. Výskyt sucha má vliv na úrodu všech daných plodin na všech kontinentech s různou intenzi-tou ohrožení. Časově se velké suché epizody globálně soustředí do posledních tří let zkoumaného šestiletého období. Z dlouhodobého hlediska nejsou zaznamenané velké odlišnosti v dopadech sucha na výnosy daných plodin. Mezi lety 2017–2022 do-šlo v některých státech k výkyvům výnosů u některých plodin. Poklesy výnosů se spolu s jinými faktory promítly do zvýšení cen zemědělských komodit. Výskytem sucha, sníženou úrodou a zvýšením cen potravin jsou více ohroženy samozásobitelské země než regiony s vysokou komerční produkcí.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with a global analysis of the impacts of drought on selected agricultural crops in the period 2017-2022, assessing the probability of the level of exposure of these crops during the most important drought episodes and their spatial and temporal variations. The final discussion assesses the potential impact of drought episodes on prices of key agricultural commodities. It also compares the differential impacts of dry episodes in the world's main exporters of these commodities with those in areas specialising in high subsistence production. A list of all affected states is created by linking the SoilClim and mHA climate model datasets by the forty states with the highest production and harvested area of the crops in question. The list of states provides the basis for calculating the proportion of area affected by drought and determining the arithmetic mean and standard deviation of the yields of the crops. The proportions, the arithmetic mean and the standard deviation are calculated using MS Excel functions. In order to determine the probability of crop exposure, spatio-temporal differentiation and hypothesis testing, a subset of states with drought area above 50 % is selected to refine the results. To determine the level of exposure, four thresholds are set according to the proportion of intervention for this subset. Hypothesis testing is performed by subtracting the yields by the n-1 method for major drought episodes for each significantly drought-affected state and its typical crop. The null hypothesis of the paper is that there is no evidence of differential effects of drought on crop production across regions and crops. Data processing and evaluation is presented using tables and graphs. The research carried out shows that historically droughts have affected Asia and Africa the most, with Europe being the most affected over the six-year period studied. The occurrence of drought affects the yields of all crops in all continents with varying degrees of severity. Temporally, major drought episodes are globally concentrated in the last three years of the six-year period under study. In the long term, there are no major differences in the effects of drought on the yields of the crops concerned. Between 2017 and 2022, some countries experienced yield fluctuations for some crops. Yield declines, along with other factors, have translated into increases in agricultural commodity prices. Subsistence countries are more vulnerable to drought, reduced yields and food price increases than regions with high commercial production.
