Roman Villas in the Britannia Province

Abstract:

Římské villy představují jeden z nejvýznamnějších příkladů procesu romanizace Velké Británie. Jejich postupné rozšíření na území provincie Britannia započalo krátce po obsazení ostrova Římany v 1. století našeho letopočtu, kdy zde noví správcové začali zavádět svůj styl života, na nějž byli navyklí ze středomořské oblasti. Stará místní aristokracie postupně přejala zvyklosti a životní styl, který s sebou dobyvatelé přinesli, a přizpůsobila si je vlastním potřebám a místním tradicím. Tato diplomová práce se snaží definovat základní společné stavební rysy a styl ve výzdobě jednotlivých skupin římských vill na území provincie Britannia, vymezit jejich funkci a sociální postavení jejich obyvatel a poukázat na vývoj, jímž prošly během čtyř staletí římské nadvlády. Samostatná kapitola shrnuje informace o villách a životě v nich, které poskytují díla soudobých římských autorů. Podstatná část je následně věnována popisu a charakteristice nejvýznamnějších lokalit. V neposlední řadě tato práce v rámci jednotlivých popisů uvádí srovnání s villami v ostatních provinciích, u nichž se snaží najít rozdíly nebo shodné rysy, jak ve stavebním stylu, tak i ve stylu výzdoby a jiných odlišnostech typických pro jejich oblast původu.

Abstract:

Romano-British villas are one of the most important examples of romanisation of the Britannia province. Their gradual expansion over the area of Roman Britain started in the first century A. D. shortly after the Roman conquest. At that time, the new incomers started introducing the way of living they were used to in the Mediterranean region. The old local aristocracy gradually adopted their customs and lifestyle and adjusted both according to their own needs and territorial traditions. Aim of this diploma thesis is to define the basic common building patterns together with the decoration styles of individual villa groups within the area of the province. The other sphere of its interest is their function, social rank of their inhabitants and villas' architectural development throughout the four centuries of Roman dominion. A separate chapter is devoted to a summary of information about villas, their erection and living in them given by contemporary Roman authors. The main part concentrates on description and characteristics of the most important localities with villas. Within this section, several similarities to villas situated in other provinces of the empire are discussed. This thesis attempts to find the architectural differences as well as decoration style or other ethnic distinctions typical of the area of Roman Britain.
