Evaluation of Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Abstract:

Česká republika měla poprvé možnost předsedat Radě Evropské unie. Velkou výzvou byla nejen skutečnost, že jsme tuto funkci přebírali po Francii, jejíž aktivní předsednictví bylo hodnoceno velmi kladně, ale také to, že Česká republika byla teprve druhým novým členským státem EU v této pozici. Cílem této diplomové práce je stručná charakteristika institutu předsednictví v návaznosti na relevantní instituce Evropské unie a především pak vyhodnocení proběhlého českého předsednictví. Zásadní je prezentování výsledků dotazníkových šetření, z nichž jedno bylo realizováno před a druhé po českém předsednictví. Podstatou provedených průzkumů bylo zjistit nejen znalosti respondentů týkající se základních parametrů našeho předsednictví, ale též názory na jeho dopady a přínosy, ať už osobní či společenské, a jejich syntézou bylo následně možné formulovat zajímavé závěry.

Abstract:

For the first time in its history, the Czech Republic had an opportunity to preside over the Council of the European Union. It was a great challenge not only to take over the EU leadership from France, whose active approach to Presidency was evaluated very positively, but also to be only the second new EU member state in this position. The Presidency had an impact not only on the country’s political and economic developments but also on its citizens. The aim of this thesis is to provide a brief description of the Presidency following the relevant institutions of the European Union and especially an evaluation of the Czech Presidency. The principal part of the thesis consists of a presentation of the results of two questionnaire surveys, one carried out before and the other after the period of the Czech Presidency. The main purpose of the two surveys was not only to identify the knowledge of respondents concerning the basic parameters of our Presidency, but also their views on the impacts and benefits, whether personal or social, and through their synthesis it was then possible to make interesting conclusions.
