The Lighthouse and Poetics of Expressionism: Between Order and Chaos

Abstract:

V mé bakalářské práci analyzuji film Maják (2019) režírovaný Robertem Eggersem v rámci neoformalistické analýzy a poetiky expresionismu 20. let a návazně pak v rámci poetiky expresivního minimalismu Ingmara Bergmana let šedesátých. Tvrdím, že Maják posouvá subjektivitu v rámci poetiky expresionismu nejen skrze nestabilní mentalitu, která se projektuje do mizanscény, jenž koreluje v rámci realističnosti s expresivním minimalismem, ale přesouvá se primárně do expresivně stylizované kamery. Na další úrovni lze pozorovat konkrétní prostředky, které jsou ovlivněny subjektivním prožitkem protagonisty (segmentace, epizodická struktura, montážní sekvence). A na třetí úrovni je to výstavba struktury filmu, kdy druhá polovina filmu odpovídá principu, na kterém je protagonista vystavěn – chaos, jenž ovlivňuje nesoudržnost druhé poloviny. Výstavba struktury polovin odrážející symbolické opoziční principy, je největším ozvláštněním v rámci poetiky expresionismu. Tedy, že jeho první polovina odpovídá principu řádu, který zastupuje postava Starého (Apollón). Výstavba druhé poloviny filmu pak symbolicky odráží princip chaosu, jenž zastupuje postava Mladého (Dionýsos). A je to symbolismus, jakožto spojující bod historické poetiky filmu s expresionismem, potažmo expresivním minimalismem, kde lokace získává na symbolickém významu a doslovné symbolické zastoupení racionality a iracionality v rámci opoziční struktury filmu, kde lze pozorovat lineární soudržnou první část oproti cyklící se nesoudržné druhé části.

Abstract:

In my bachelor's thesis I analyze the film The Lighthouse (2019) directed by Robert Eggers within the neoformalist analysis and poetics of expressionism of the 1920s and subsequently within the poetics of expressive minimalism of Ingmar Bergman in the 1960s. I claim that The Lighthouse shifts subjectivity within the poetics of expressionism not only through unstable mentality which projects itself into a mise-en-scène which correlates within realism with expressive minimalism, but it primary shifts to the expressively stylized camera. On the next level, specific tools which are influenced by the subjective experience of the protagonist (segmentation, episodic structure, montage sequence), can be observed. And on the third level, it is the construction of the structure of the film, when the second half of the film corresponds to the principle on which the protagonist is built – chaos which affects the incoherence of the second half. The construction of the structure of halves reflecting the symbolic opposition principles is the biggest peculiarity within the poetics of expressionism. Meaning that its first half corresponds to the principle of order which is represented by the character Old (Apollo). The structure of the second half of the film symbolically reflects the principle of chaos, which is represented by the character Young (Dionysus). And it is the symbolism as the point of connection between the historical poetics of the movie with expressionism, therefore expressive minimalism, where the location gains symbolic meaning and literal symbolic representation of rationality and irrationality within the oppositional structure of the movie where the linear coherence of the first part in contrast to the cycling incoherent second part can be observed.
