The use of Lemna minor for evaluation fluoranthene toxicity

Abstract:

Na zvyšujícím se stupni antropogenního znečištění životního prostředí se významně podílejí polycyklické aromatické uhlovodíky (PAHs). Cílem diplomové práce bylo posoudit vliv jednoho z nejrozšířenějších zástupců PAHs - fluoranthenu (FLT) a jeho zvyšující se koncentrace (0,1 and 1 mg/l) na růst (počet rostlin, listová plocha) a primární fotosyntetické procesy (parametry fluorescence chlorofylu, obsah fotosyntetických pigmentů) okřehku menšího (Lemna minor L.). Tato rychle rostoucí rostlina je v současnosti hojně využívána jako modelový organismus pro studium ekologie společenstev, ekotoxikologie, produkce biofarmak. Své uplatnění nalezla rovněž v zemědělství a vodním hospodářství. Testování okřehku probíhalo celkem 10 dnů s vyhodnocením parametrů 0., 4. a 10. den experimentu. Signifikantní snížení počtu rostlin, produkce biomasy a velikosti listové plochy byly zaznamenány jen po 4 dnech kultivace v FLT 1 mg/l, zatímco nižší koncentrace FLT 0,1 mg/l dočasně stimulovala obsah fotosyntetických pigmentů. Překvapivě, po 10 dnech kultivace v obou zatíženích FLT, nebyly zaznamenány významné negativní účinky na žádný ze sledovaných parametrů.

Abstract:

The increasing degree of anthropogenic pollution of the environment is also caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the influence of one of the most widespread representatives of PAHs - fluoranthene (FLT) and its increasing concentrations (0,1 and 1 mg/l) on growth (number of plants, leaf area) and primary photosynthetic processes (parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence, content of photosynthetic pigments) of common duckweed (Lemna minor L.). This rapidly-growing plant as a model organism for studies in community ecology, ecotoxicology, production of biopharmaceuticals. It is also used in agriculture and water management. Testing of duckweed lasted 10 days with the evaluation of parameters on day 0, 4 and 10 of the experiment. Significant decrease of plant number, biomass production and leaf area size was registered only after 4 days of cultivation in FLT 1 mg/l treatment, whereas the lower concentration FLT 0.1 mg/l temporarily stimulated the content of photosynthetic pigments. Surprisingly, after 10 days of cultivation in both FLT, treatments no significant negative effects to any assessed parameter were found.
