Quine´s Thesis on the Indeterminacy of Translation and Sapir-Whorf´s Hypothesis

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o filosofickém a antropologickém přístup k jazyku a k problému překladu z jednoho přirozeného jazyka do jiného. V první části práce bude vyložena teze o neurčitosti překladu a bude zasazena do kontextu ostatních myšlenek W. V. O. Quinea. Hlavní myšlenka jeho naturalizované teze o neurčitosti překladu spočívá v tom, že vytvářejí-li dva překladatelé překladovou příručku z jednoho jazyka do druhého, nebude se jejich překlad shodovat. Quine navíc dodává, že není možné určit, která z příruček je ta správná. Ve druhé části práce je představen jazykový relativismus tak, jak jej postupně rozpracovali Edward Sapir a Benjamin Lee Whorf. Tato teorie tvrdí, že jazyk, kterým lidé mluví, ovlivňuje jejich myšlení a chápání světa kolem nich. Práce odkrývá počátky vzniku teorie, zabývá se charakteristikou hypotézy samé a její kritikou. Třetí části obsahuje vlastní reflexi dané problematiky a její interpretaci.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the philosophical and anthropological approach to language and critically examines the problem of translation from one natural language in to another. The first part analyzes the concept of indeterminacy of translation in the broad context of W. V. O. Quine´s philosophy. The core of the naturalized thesis of indeterminacy of translation lies in the fact that if two translators create a translation guide from one language to another, this two guides (or dictionaries) shall never be the same. It also concluded that it is impossible to determine which of the guides the correct one is. The second part of the thesis introduces a linguistic relativism gradually developed by two American philosophers: Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf. This theory states that the spoken language fundamentally affects human thinking and also defines individual understanding of the world around us. It also unveils the origins of the theory, describes the hypothesis itself and examines critique by other philosophers. Finally, third part of the thesis provides a reflection on analyzed issues and offers interpretation of selected philosophical concepts.
