Diversity and ecology of Antarctic microscopic fungi

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá diverzitou, ekologií a taxonomií mikroskopických hub Antarktidy. Antarktida je studený a nehostinný kontinent. Antarktické houby jsou vystaveny působení mnoha stresovým faktorům prostředí, proti nimž si vyvinuly různé ochranné mechanismy. Diverzita hub Antarktidy je nižší než v oblastech s mírným klimatem, ale naopak vyšší, než jak by se dalo původně očekávat. Houby se v Antarktidě nacházejí v půdě, vodě, vzduch, ledu, na vegetaci a na ptačích exkrementech. Některé jsou parazité zvířat nebo predátoři. Díky svým adaptačním schopnostem se dokázaly přizpůsobit i životu na nepůvodních substrátech. Většina druhů mikroskopických hub byla do Antarktidy zanesena z jiných oblastí. Mezi tyto houby patří široce rozšířené rody Phoma, Thelebolus, Penicillium a Geomyces. Pouze několik druhů je skutečně původních nebo dokonce endemických. Typickým příkladem jsou černé meristematické houby žijící v Suchém Údolí McMurdo ve Východní Antarktidě. Význam studia antarktických mikroskopických hub spočívá v jejich možném využití jako nových producentů antibiotik, modelů pro exobiologické studie nebo pro zkoumání vlivů globálního oteplování.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on diversity, ecology and taxonomy of Antarctic microscopic fungi. Antarctica is a cold and inhospitable continent thus the Antarctic fungi are exposed to many environmental stresses, against which they have developed different adaptations. Diversity of fungi in the Antarctic climate is lower than in temperate regions, but it is rather higher than one might initially expect. Antarctic fungi are found in soil, water, air, ice, bird excrement and on vegetation. Some of them are animal parasites or predators. They can live on allochthonous substrates due to their adaption abilities. Most species of microscopic fungi have been introduced to Antarctica from other areas. These fungi are cosmopolitan genera Phoma, Thelebolus, Penicillium and Geomyces. Only a few species are truly autochthonous, or even endemic. A typical example is a group of the black meristematic fungi living in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of East Antarctica. The importance of microscopic study of Antarctic fungi lies in their potential use as novel producers of antibiotics, models for exobiological studies or for exploration of the effects of global warming.
