Shadow as a graphic variable in cartographic visualization

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o problematice stínu jako grafické proměnné v kartografii. Protože se stín stále častěji využívá ve 2D a 3D vizualizacích, je tato problematika velmi aktuální a je na místě ji zkoumat hlouběji. Hlavním cílem práce bylo shrnutí možností využití a ověření vlivu stínu na vnímání kartografické vizualizace. Součástí práce bylo také praktické testování, které proběhlo metodou Eye tracking. Výzkum zjišťoval vliv šesti směrů osvětlení, pěti směrů osvětlení ze SZ a jednoho směru z JV, na vnímání povrchu reliéfu. Byl vykonaný na vzorku pěti respondentů, kteří rozhodovali, zdali je vybraný útvar údolí nebo horský hřeben. Výsledky ukázaly, že nejvhodnějšími směry pro osvětlování reliéfu jsou úhly 326,25° a 337,5°. Při osvětlení z těchto směrů se respondenti nedopustili žádných chyb při určování vybraného útvaru a také si byli ve svých odpovědích nejvíce jisti (téměř 93% jistota). Dále bylo potvrzeno, že osvětlení z JV vytváří inverzní chápání reliéfu a není proto vhodné jej k těmto vizualizacím používat.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of the shadow as a graphic variable in cartography. Because shadow has been more and more frequently used in 2D and 3D visualisations, this issue is very topical and it’s appropriate to examine it further. The main aim of the thesis has been to summarize the possibilities of usage and verification of the influence of shadow on the perception of the cartographic visualisation. Practical testing by the Eye tracking method has been included in the thesis. The research has been investigating the impact of six directions of illumination, 5 directions from northwest and one from southeast, on the perception of the relief surface. The five research participants have been deciding whether the given reliefs are a valley or a mountain ridge. The results have shown that the most suitable angles for the relief illumination are 326.25° and 337.5°. With the illumination from these directions, the participants have made no mistakes in identifying the given reliefs and they were the most certain about their answers (almost 93% certainty). It has been confirmed that the illumination from the southeast direction creates the inverse relief perception and, therefore, it’s not appropriate to use for these visualisations.
