Virus as a research subject in the new media discourse

Abstract:

Ačkoliv problematice počítačových virů je věnována zvýšená pozornost již od konce 80. let. Publikované studie se věnují převážně praktické otázce bezpečnosti digitálních sítí a jsou většinou soustředěny na popis technických aspektů počítačových virů. Zatímco zahraniční badatelé v oblasti nových médií tento deficit pomalu napravují a nahlížejí virus jako kulturní, politický nebo umělecký fenomén, v českém prostředí tento typ reflexe dosud chybí. Tato diplomová práce tedy usiluje o nápravu tohoto stavu a zároveň představuje i pokus o zpřesnění definice počítačového viru jako svébytné entity v kontextu digitální kultury. Mapuje dostupnou literaturu, která zkoumá počítačový virus v diskurzu nových médií. Pokouší se o shrnutí dosavadní debaty probíhající okolo počítačového viru, vymezení metodologických hledisek využívaných jednotlivými autory a identifikaci výrazných motivů, které se opakují v reflektovaných studiích. Uvažování o počítačovém viru je rozčleněno do tří výrazných proudů, které operují s odlišnými filozofickými východisky. Pro jejich identifikaci je využita terminologie francouzského filozofa Bruno Latoura, který rozlišuje moderní, postmoderní a nemoderní typy myšlení. Cílem této práce je vytvořit jakousi mapu, která ve zhuštěné podobě zprostředkovává bohatství přístupů a názorů obklopujících výzkum počítačového viru, z níž by mohli vycházet další badatelé, kteří by se již zaměřovali na konkrétní detaily a pronikali hlouběji do dané oblasti.

Abstract:

Although the issue of computer viruses has been focused on fairly closely since late 80s, the published studies focus mainly on the practical question of safety of digital network and are mostly concentrated on merely the description of technical aspects of computer viruses. While foreign researchers in the area of new media are slowly correcting this deficit and perceiving this virus as cultural, political and artistic phenomenon, Czech environment still lacks this kind of reflection. This thesis therefore seeks to remedy this state and at the same time constitutes an attempt to better specify the definition of a computer virus as a self-contained entity in the context of digital culture. The thesis surveys the literature which studies a computer virus in the discourse of new media. It attempts to summarize the existing debates about a computer virus, to define methodological aspects used by individual authors and to identify significant motives reoccurring in reflected studies and it creates fundamental basis for speculating about a computer virus. Thinking about computer virus is divided into three distinctive streams which operating with different philosophical assumptions. For their identification is used terminology of french philosopher Bruno Latour who distinguish modern, postmodern and amodern types of thinking. The goal of this thesis is to create a kind of a map which in condense form provides a quantity of approaches and opinions surrounding the research of a computer virus from which other researchers could proceed focusing on concrete details and gaining more profound insight into a particular area.
