Sociophonetic analysis of a film character’s accent: Sam from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá výslovností fiktivní filmové postavy, která mluví s předem specifikovaným a konkrétním Britským přízvukem, a která je ztvárněna americkým hercem. Hlavním cílem této práce je aplikace metod akcentové analýzy na napodobeninu konkrétního přízvuku ve filmovém prostředí, za účelem zjištění, zda jsou tyto metody užitečné k posouzení kvality hercova výkonu. Filmová postava byla vybrána na základě přesnosti, se kterou byl specifikovaný region, jehož dialekt měla postava ztvárnit, a také různící se názory na úspěch dané imitace. Dokonalá imitace cílového přízvuku, stejně jako imitace velmi špatná, by neposkytli příhodný materiál k této analýze. Z těchto hlavních důvodů byla vybrána postava Sama z trilogie Pán Prstenů režiséra Petera Jacksona, ztvárněného Kalifornským hercem Seanem Astinem. Po krátkém komentáři k sociolingvistickým aspektům volby přízvuku této postavy jsou představeny základní metody analýzy v této práci. Dále je sestaven model cílového přízvuku pomocí průzkumu literatury, a analýzy idiolektu vybraného rodilého mluvčího tohoto dialektu. Druhý model přirozeného přízvuku herce je sestaven analogickým způsobem, kde je použit rozhovor s ním, jako reprezentativní vzorek jeho přízvuku. Tento model je sestaven, za účelem poskytnutí širšího kontextu k případným chybám, a napověděl na jaké znaky se při vlastní analýze zaměřit. I když se objevily problémy s tím, jak výsledky analýzy interpretovat, tak analýza nakonec přinesla lepší porozumění, proč se názory na hercův výkon tak liší, a nastínila které oblasti imitace byly dobře provedené, a které se naopak úplně nezdařily.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with the pronunciation of a fictional film character, speaking with a specific British accent, portrayed by an American actor. The main aim of the study is to apply methods of accent analysis to an imitated accent in the context of a film and learn how useful they are in judging the quality of the imitation. The choice of the character was guided by the need for specificity, as the clear localization of the target accent was crucial to being able to judge its accuracy. The other essential criterion was the variability of opinion, as a completely correct imitation would make the analysis less interesting, as would a highly inaccurate one. For these reasons the character of Sam from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy was chosen. After a brief commentary on the sociolinguistic aspects of the accent choice, the methods used for the analysis are introduced. Then a model of the target accent is constructed by reviewing relevant literature and closely studying an example of a native speaker of the target dialect. A second model of the actor’s original accent is constructed in order to provide insight into the most salient differences between his original accent and the target accent, as well as to provide context for the inaccuracies in the imitation. Finally the character’s utterances in the films are closely analysed, individual features are commented upon, and an attempt to judge the accuracy of the imitation is made. While some problems with the interpretations of the results were discovered, the analysis did provide insight into the reasons for the variability of opinions on the performance, as well as pointed to areas where the imitation was accurate, and where it was found lacking.
