The influence of ecological and geographical factors on the diversity of aquatic mollusc at a regional scale

Abstract:

Společenstva organismů jsou ovlivňována faktory na lokální a regionální úrovni, které mohou být ekologické, geografické nebo demografické. Pokud chceme porozumět faktorům strukturujícím metaspolečenstva, musíme zohlednit všechny tyto vlivy. V případě sladkovodních měkkýšů, kteří jsou důležitou součástí ekosystémových procesů a služeb, se přisuzoval hlavní vliv právě jejich schopnosti šíření. Kdy si při pasivním způsobem šíření nemohou aktivně zvolit pro ně vhodná stanoviště. V rámci studie bylo v roce 2015 a 2016 sledováno metaspolečenstvo vodních měkkýšů na 63 lokalitách v kompaktním území Jižní Moravy bez výrazných geomorfologických bariér. Celkově zde bylo nalezeno 29 druhů (5 mlžů a 24 plžů) vodních měkkýšů. Jednotlivá tělesa v oblasti o rozloze 50 km2 byla od sebe vzdálena od 77 m až po 8,6 km. Nejhojnějším druhem byla u nás nepůvodní Physa acuta, který se vyskytovala na 54 lokalitách. Naopak nejcennější byl nález druhu Anisus voticulus, který je zařazen do soustavy NATURA 2000 (Beran et al. 2005) a byl nalezen na sedmi lokalitách. Faktory prostředí ovlivňující druhovou bohatost se podle předpokladů částečně shodovaly s faktory ovlivňujícími druhovou skladbu. Významně druhovou skladu i bohatost ovlivňovalo zastínění, napadaný materiál, vzájemná napojenost lokalit, délka břehové linie, množství chlorofylu a množství sinic. Kromě množství sinic a chlorofylu, které negativně korelovaly s druhovou bohatostí, byl v případě ostatních významných faktorů pozorován vztah pozitivní. Pouze pro variabilitu druhové skladby se jako důležitá ukázala hrubost substrátu, hloubka 10 cm od břehu, přítomnost moru kanadského a částečně i průhlednost a profil litorálu. I přesto, že zastínění korelovalo s množstvím chlorofylu, nelze jím vyjadřovat úživnost tělesa, protože rozsáhlejší břehové porosty mohou hrát také roli bariéry pro vektory šíření, a nejen pro sluneční paprsky. Ve sledované oblasti tak zastínění reprezentuje spíše stáří a zachovalost lokalit a z toho důvodu se na lokalitách s vyšším zastíněním vyskytovalo více druhů. Pro zjištění vlivu prostorového uspořádaní a proměnných prostředí na metaspolečenstvo byl použit Mantel test a parciální Mantel test. Při odstranění vztahu mezi vzdálenostmi lokalit a proměnnými prostředí se při strukturování metaspolečenstva vodních měkkýšů ani jeden z vlivů neukázal jako významný. Protože odpověď celého metaspolečenstva nemusí být vnitřně homogenní, ukazuje se jako vhodné kategorizovat vodní měkkýše podle vlastností, které souvisí s jejich schopností šíření. Při srovnání malých (≤ 7,5 mm) a velkých (> 7,5 mm) druhů bylo metaspolečenstvo malých druhů prokazatelně řízeno vzdáleností lokalit, zatímco u velkých nepřevažoval ani jeden ze sledovaných vlivů. Po zohlednění frekvence výskytu druhů v oblasti se ukázalo, že velké druhy, díky tomu že jsou v oblasti mnohem běžnější, mají vyšší pravděpodobnost nalezení a výběru pro ně vhodných lokalit. Naopak malé druhy, které byly v oblasti většinou vzácnější, se tak snadno na vzdálenější lokality, byť vhodných podmínek, rozšířit nemohou a jsou proto řízeny převážně prostorovým vlivem. Oproti očekávání se pro strukturování metaspolečenstva náročných druhů ukázal jako významný vliv vzdálenosti lokalit a u nenáročných druhů vliv podmínek prostředí. Výsledek je i zde, jako v případě malých a velkých druhů, velmi pravděpodobně řízen celkovou početností populací jednotlivých druhů. Abstract:

Each biotic community is affected by factors on regional and local scales, which can be ecological, geographical and demographical. For our understanding the factors structuring metacommunity, it is necessary to consider all these effects. In the case of freshwater molluscs, being important part of ecosystems processes and services, their dispersal ability was considered to be the main importance. This is particularly because the passive dispersers, such as molluscs, cannot actively choose the most suitable habitats. In this study, during 2015 and 2016, there was sampled metacommunity of freshwater mollusc of 63 standing water bodies in a compact area of South Moravia (Czech Republic) without apparent geo-morphological barriers. In total 29 species (5 bivalves and 24 gastropods) of aquatic molluscs were found there. In the area of 50 km2, the water bodies were distant from each other from 77 m to 8.6 km. The most abundant species was the non-native Physa acuta, which occurred in 54 localities. On the contrary, the most valuable species recorded at seven sites was Anisus voticulus, which is included in the NATURA 2000 (Beran et al. 2005). Environmental factors influencing species richness, in line with a previous assumption, partly coincided with factors affecting the species composition. Species richness and species composition were significantly influenced by canopy cover, fallen material, interconnection between sites, length of shoreline, amount of chlorophyll and the amount of cyanobacteria. Except for the amount of cyanobacteria and chlorophyll that negatively correlated with species richness, other significant factors had a positive impact. Only for the variability of species composition, there was important roughness of the substrate, depth 10 cm from the shore, the presence of Elodea canadensis, and partly the transparency of water and profile of the littoral zone. Even though canopy cover correlated with the amount of chlorophyll, it cannot express on its own the nutrition level of the lake, because larger coastal vegetation can also be the barrier for dispersal vectors, and not just for sunlight. In the study area, canopy cover represents rather the age and conservation status of the localities, and for this reason more species were occurred in the areas with higher canopy cover. The Mantel test and the Partial Mantel test were used to determine the effect of spatial and environmental variables on the metacommunity. When the relationship between space and environment variables was removed, neither one of the effects proved to be significant for the structure of mollusc metacommunity. Because the response of the whole metacommunity does not have to be internally homogeneous, it appears to be appropriate to categorize water molluscs according to their properties related to their dispersal ability. When compared small (≤ 7.5 mm) and large (> 7.5 mm) species, metacommunity of small species was notably controlled by spatial effect, while for large species there was no prevailing effect. After taking into account the frequency of the species occurrence in the area, it was concluded that large species, because they are much more common in the area, have a higher probability of finding and choosing suitable sites for them. In contrast, small species, which were mostly rare in the area, cannot easily spread to distant locations, even if these have the right conditions, and are therefore predominantly driven by the spatial effect. Contrary to predictions, the distance between localities proved to have a significant influence on structuring the metacommunity of demanding species, and environmental variables on the generalist species. Likewise, populations of small and large species were very likely driven by their population sizes.
