Study of toluene permeability through six polymeric membranes

Abstract:

Transportní a separační vlastnosti byly studovány pro šest různých membrán. Získané výsledky byly diskutovány z hlediska možnosti aplikace pro separaci toluenových par ze znečištěného vzduchu. Testován byl nejen samotný dusíku, ale i binární směsi obsahující různé koncentrace toluenu s dusíkem. Mezi studovanými membránami byly polyethylen, polypropylen, polyvinylalkohol, polydimethylsiloxan, polyetherblokamid Pebax 1657 a Pebax 2533. Polyethylen a polypropylen byly zvoleny jako zástupci velmi málo propustných polymerů. Pro porovnání transportních a separačních vlastností byly zvoleny polyvinylalkohol a Pebax 1657 jako zástupci hydrofilních membránových materiálů. Polydimethylsiloxan byl zvolen jako velmi propustný polymer, což potvrdily i výsledky experimentálních testů s řadou binárních směsí obsahujících toluen a dusík. Pebax 2533 byl zvolen jako hydrofobní polymer s velmi dobrou afinitou k organickým látkám, což bylo potvrzeno i získanými výsledky s nejvyšší propustností toluenových par 12486 Barrer ze všech studovaných membrán a selektivitou mezi toluenem a dusíkem až 1307. Ze získaných výsledků vyplývá, že membrána Pebax 2533 je vhodná pro separaci toluenových par z ovzduší.

Abstract:

Transport and separation properties were studied for six different membranes. Results were analyzed and discussed from the viewpoint of their potential application for capturing organic vapor from polluted air. Permeation experiments included pure nitrogen and binary mixtures containing various concentrations of toluene vapor. The membranes studied were: polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl alcohol, polydimethylsiloxane, polyether block amide Pebax 1657, and Pebax 2533. Low-permeability membrane materials were represented by polyethylene and polypropylene. Polydimethylsiloxane was a high-permeability membrane material, and the results corresponded to its generally known good transport properties for both pure nitrogen and toluene vapor. A comparison was carried out with hydrophilic membranes, namely polyvinyl alcohol and Pebax 1657. Pebax 2533 was chosen for its hydrophobic character and was expected to be a potentially good material for capturing toluene vapor from polluted air. The expected very good organophilic character was confirmed by the highest values of toluene permeability, up to 12,486 Barrer, and the selectivity between toluene and nitrogen, up to 1,307. Therefore, Pebax 2533 can potentially be a good membrane for separating toluene from polluted air.
