Analysis of visual perception role in insect magnetorception.

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se věnuje studiu magnetorecepce neboli vnímání magnetického pole Země. Teoretická část popisuje všeobecné informace o geomagnetickém poli, o orientaci živočichů pomocí magnetorecepce a vysvětluje hlavní hypotézy o fungování magnetorecepčního smyslu. Největší pozornost je zde věnována hypotéze radikálových párů. Protože tato hypotéza předpokládá spojení magnetorecepce s fotorecepcí, věnuji se v této práci i zraku a obecným vlastnostem složeného oka hmyzu. Ve své experimentální části se zabývám problematikou vidění přirozeného magnetického pole. Představuje první z řady kroků zkoumající otázku vzniku vizuálních obrazců generovaných magnetickým polem. Praktická část proto obsahuje přípravné, nicméně velmi důležité studie, které jsou zaměřené na behaviorální experimenty analyzující spontánní směrovou preferenci potemníka hnědého (Tribolium castaneum). Zkoumána byla orientace ve vztahu k vizuálním orientačním bodům představující kontrastní kruhové vzory. Součástí byl i experiment, který se snažil zjistit možný vliv pachových stop na orientační chování potemníků. Prvotní výzkum s orientačními body neprokazuje žádnou směrovou spontánní preferenci, protože potemníci statisticky významně nereagovali na žádný orientační kontrastní vzor. Výsledky prokázaly, že ani feromonové stopy ani vizuální vodítka nejsou pro orientaci potemníka hnědého významné a teprve splnění těchto předpokladů umožňuje v budoucnu aplikovat další typy testů směřujících k prokázání role zrakových vjemů v magnetorecepci hmyzu.

Abstract:

This work deals with the study of magnetoreption, the ability to perceive the magnetic field of the Earth. The theoretical part describes general information about the geomagnetic field, the orientation of the animals by means of magnetoreception and explains the main hypotheses about the functioning of the magnetoreception sense. The greatest attention is paid to the hypothesis of radical pairs. Since this hypothesis would require a connection between magnetoreception and fotoreception, I deal vision and general characteristics of the compound eyes of insects in this work. In experimental section, I deal with the problem of seeing the natural magnetic field. It is the first step in a series of steps to explore the question of visual patterns generated by the magnetic field. The practical part, therefore, provides initial but very important studies, which are focused on behavioral experiments analyzing spontaneous directional preference of flour pest (Tribolium castaneum). Orientation was examined in relation to visual cues, represented by contrasting circular patterns. The goal of another experimental was determine the possible effect of scent marks on the orientation behavior flour beetles. This initial research with landmarks did not show any spontaneous directional preference, because flour beetles significantly responded to neither black nor white orientation contrast patterns. The results showed that either pheromone trails or visual cues aren’t used by Tribolium castaneum for orientation in our tests, and only accomplishment of these conditions makes it possible to apply other types of tests aimed to demonstrate the role of visual perception in insects’ magnetoreception in the future.
