Military equipment of the castle Rokštejn in wider centraleuropean Context

Abstract:

Zpracovávané téma rozebírá nejen vojenskou složku hradu Rokštejna, která se odráží v archeologických situacích, ale i širší historické souvislosti zkoumaného regionu Brtnicka v průběhu 13. až 15. století včetně vývoje osídlení, majetkových změn a politických vztahů. Hlavní částí práce představuje zpracování souboru militárí z hradního areálu Rokštejn v porovnání s dalšími hradními lokalitami s plošným archeologickým odkryvem, a to s hrady Vízmburk a Sion, dále sběrový materiál z hradu Hus a z menšího opevněného sídla Božanov. V blízkosti zmiňovaných hradních lokalit (Hus, Sion) byly detekovány obléhací systémy palebných postavení, které dokreslují zánikový horizont lokality stejně jako v případě Rokštejna. Pro zachycená militária a obléhací postavení byl dohledán srovnávací materiál ze širšího středovropského prostoru na různé úrovni zpracování. Na Rokštejně byly detekovány dva zánikové horizonty spojené s vojenskou akcí, doprovázené militárii a první dokonce zlomky lidských ostatků odkrytých pouze v areálu tzv. horního hradu. První horizont se hlasí před výstavbu hlavní věže horního hradu patrně před roky 1306/1307. Tato data jsou zjištěna dendrochronologickou analýzou. Druhý zánikový horizont hradu dokumentují destrukce a požár kamenných objektů ve vnitřním areálu hradu, dochovaná militária a obléhací postavení v blízkosti hradu. Horizont spadá až do druhé poloviny 15. století.

Abstract:

Presented thesis was focused on the military component of the castle of Rokštejn represented especially within its archaeological record. Beside that it also dealt with broader historical aspects of the surrounding region of Brtnicko from 13th to 15th century including the development of its settlement structure, changes in assets and political relations. Cardinal part of the thesis was focused on the analysis and evaluation of the military objects found within the inner area of Rokstejn castle and their formal comparison with the assemblages from other sites excavated by similar method, namely Vízmburk and Sion, and with the collections coming from surface prospections conducted at the castle of Hus and at smaller fortification of Božanov. Other comparable material was assembled from the wider territory of central Europe. In the vicinity of the aforementioned sites (Hus, Sion) there were detected siege positions directly in connection with the end of their occupation. Similar situation was observed at Rokštejn castle where two catastrophic horizons indubitably connected with particular military actions were detected. First one revealed even human remains preserved within the area of so called “upper castle”. Relevant material (especially the military equipment) was assigned to the individual events. According to dendrochronology the first event took place most likely before 1306/1307. The second catastrophic horizon is documented by vast destruction and fire of the buildings within the inner area of castle, by characteristic military objects and also by detected siege position in the vicinity. This horizon was dated to the second half of 15th century.
