The Maya Concept of Death and Afterlife in the Work of Diego de Landa

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské diplomové práce je pojetí smrti a posmrtného života u Mayů očima františkánského mnicha Diega de Landy, který v šestnáctém století působil jako misionář na poloostrově Yucatán v dnešním Mexiku. Křesťanská víra zapříčinila jeho specifický pohled na způsob života Mayů, a tedy i na mayské představy o smrti a posmrtném životě. Ve Zprávě o věcech na Yucatánu z roku 1566, kde Diego de Landa zachycuje mayský způsob života, se zmiňuje také o pohřbívání mrtvých a posmrtném životě. Nevědomky však v indiánském vnímání smrti hledá křesťanské prvky a používá křesťanskou terminologii, která nemůže dostatečně popsat mayské představy. Po úvodním nastínění okolností Landova působení mezi indiány a vlivu, jaký měl na úroveň dnešních poznatků o mayském způsobu života, se tato práce zaměřuje na svůj hlavní cíl. Tím je zjistit, do jaké míry Landovo náboženské přesvědčení ovlivnilo jeho pohled na eschatologii Mayů, a proč širokou látku pojednávající o smrti a posmrtném životě omezil právě na vybraná témata, která ve své knize popisuje.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor thesis is the conception of death and life after life among Mayas according to Franciscan monk Diego de Landa who worked as a missionary on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico in the sixteenth century. Christianity influenced his specific view on the Mayan way of life and their ideas about death and life after life. In Relation of the Things of Yucatán from 1566 where Diego de Landa captured the Mayan way of life, he also mentioned burials of deaths and life after life. However, he unconsciously looked for Christian elements in the conception of death by American Indians and therefore he uses Christian terminology which could not describe Mayan ideas enough. After the introduction which describes the circumstances of Landa’s activity among American Indians and influence that he had on the level of present knowledge about the Mayan way of life, this work focuses on the main topic. That is to find out how much Landa’s religious conviction influenced his view on Mayan eschatology and why he reduced the theme of death and life after life to such an extent in order to mention only a couple of selected topics which he describes in his book.
