Nigeria as a regional power.

Abstract:

Tématem mé práce je Nigérie jako regionální mocnost. A cílem mé práce je zjistit, zda-li opravdu Nigérie regionálním hegemonem je. Jak jsem se přesvědčil, teorie regionální hegemonie není jednotná. Každý z autorů, který se zabývá (píše) o regionální hegemonii má svoji vlastní teorii. Já zde uvedl několik autorů s jejich podmínkami regionální hegemonie. Vybral jsem si podmínky dle Miriam Prys. V druhé části mé práce se věnuji vnitřní situaci Nigérie. Zaměřuji se velkou heterogenitu země. Nachází se zde přes dvě stě padesát etnik a čtyři sta různých jazyků. Kromě četných etnických skupin a mnoha jazyků je další štěpící linií náboženství. Sever Nigérie je islámský a jsou tu četné nepokoje, střety a atentáty. Za většinou z nich stojí teroristická skupina Boko Haram. Vládě se nedaří příliš tuto situaci zvládat. Nigérie vytvořila federaci a více decentralizovala etnické skupiny, což paradoxně vyvolává ještě více střetů a Nigérie postrádá jednotnou občanskou společnost. Ve třetí části se věnuji ekonomice Nigérie. Nigérie má velké zásoby ropy a zemního plynu. Země je bohatá právě kvůli těmto přírodním zdrojům. Až 95 % příjmu státu jsou právě z ropy a zemního plynu. Závěr kapitoly věnuji oblasti delty Nigeru, která je přelidněná, plná konfliktů mezi etnickými skupinami a ropnými společnostmi, které zde těží ropu. Těžbou ropy a zemního plynu je zde poznamenané životní prostředí. V poslední části se věnuji vlivu Nigérie směrem pryč ze státu v regionu západní Afriky. Zabývám se vlivu Nigérie v rámci regionální organizace ECOWAS a jejím fungování, projekty atd. V práci se zmiňuju o organizacích AU a OSN, ve kterých se Nigérie nachází. Zaměřil jsem se na vliv Nigérie v rámci těchto struktur a zda-li tyto organizace nahlížejí na Nigérii jako zástupce celého regionu. V závěru práce sleduji, zda-li vytyčené podmínky v úvodu mé práce Nigérie naplňuje.

Abstract:

The topic of my thesis is Nigeria as a regional power. The goal of my thesis is to find out, if is Nigeria truly a regional hegemon. As I found out, the theory of regional hegemony is not unified. Each author who is exploring this field has his own theory. I mentioned only few authors with their theories in my thesis for example theory of Miriam Prys. In second part of my thesis I'm describing inner states situation in Nigeria. My aim was show heterogenity with in the state itself. In Nigeria you can find two hundred and fifty ethnic groups and over four hundred languages and dialects. Except this diversification there are much more cleavages, such as religion. The north of Nigeria is islamic and it's known for its instability, of the armed conflicts and assassinations. Behind most of these actions stands terrorist group know as Boko Haram. The government is trying to handle this situation for some time, but without a bigger success. As a reaction to these actions, Nigeria has been officially transformed into federation to decentralize ethnic groups, which created much more inner conflict. In third part of my thesis I focus on economics of Nigeria and its natural resources. Nigeria is a really rich country thanks to big amounts of oil, natural gases and other natural resources. Almost 95 % of Nigerian income comes from oil and natural gases. The rest of third chapter I'm going to dedicate to delta of river Niger, which is highly overpopulated, full of conflicts between inhabitants and oil companies. Mining for oil in these areas has a really bad influence on the environment within Nigeria. In the last chapter I try to focus on influence of Nigeria outside territory, especially on the region of West Africa. I'm explaining the influence of Nigeria on international organization ECOWAS with projects of security. In my thesis I also mention in term national organizations in which is Nigeria a member state such as ECOWAS, AU and UN. I focused on position of Nigeria within these organizations and also if these organizations see Nigeria as a regional power. In the end of my thesis I'm finding out if Nigeria meets the criteria to be a regional power.
