“Healthy Crazies Shamanizing”: Do Psychotic-like Experiences Affect Who Becomes Shaman?

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce bolo preskúmať medzikultúrny fenomén šamanizmu, prejavy kvázi-psychotických skúsenosti a ich možný podiel na propagovaní šamanskej právomoci. Najskôr argumentujeme, že osoby, ktoré prejavujú kvázi-psychotické zážitky budú vhodnejšie pre rolu šamana, vzhľadom na ich abnormálnu mentalitu a správanie. Dôvodom je, že ich abnormálne zážitky by mohli predstavovať prejav domnelých nadprirodzených schopností, zdanlivo schopných ovplyvňovať nekontrolovateľné udalosti, čo je doménou šamanskej právomoci. Preto by jednotlivci s týmito zážitkami mohli byť vhodnejší do role šamana. Po druhé, kvázi-psychotické skúsenosti sú vysvetlené hypotézou psychotického kontinua, ktorá ich opisuje ako podklinické prejavy kontinuálne s prejavmi bežnými. Predstavovaná práca následne preskúmala túto hypotézu vykonaním pilotného empirického výskumu za použitia eHRAFu, databázy etnografických textov. Cieľom tohto pilotného výskumu bolo preveriť, nakoľko je vzťah medzi šamanmi a psychózou logicky možný, ako aj prispieť k širšej diskusii psychiatricky orientovaného výskumu šamanizmu. Výsledky výskumu naznačili nedostatočnú podporu pre navrhovanú hypotézu, pričom možné dôvody pre tieto výsledky, ako aj alternatívne objasnenia, sú posúdené v diskusnej sekcii.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine the cross-cultural phenomenon of shamanism, expression of psychotic-like experiences and their possible contribution in promoting shamanic jurisdiction. First, it is argued that individuals who exhibit psychotic-like experiences would be more suited for the role of shaman, given their abnormal psychology and behavior. The reason is that abnormal experiences could constitute the manifestation of apparent supernatural abilities, seemingly capable of influencing uncontrollable events, which is the domain of shamanic jurisdiction. Therefore, such experiences might promote individuals who have them as suitable for the shaman role. Second, the psychotic-like experiences are explained using psychosis continuum hypothesis, describing them as subclinical and continuous with normality. The presented work then investigates this hypothesis by conducting a pilot empirical research using eHRAF database of ethnographic texts. The objective of this pilot research was to examine whether connection between shamans and psychosis is logically feasible, as well as to contribute to a larger discussion of psychiatric-oriented research of shamanism. The results of this research suggested scant support for the proposed hypothesis and the possible reasons for this finding, including alternative explanations, are reviewed in the discussion section.
