An E-book from the point of view of the new media theory

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Elektronická kniha z pohledu teorie nových médií“ se zabývá analýzou elektronické knihy a elektronického textu z hlediska typických vlastností nových médií jak je definují teoretici Martin Lister a Lev Manovich. Aplikací těchto charakteristik a uvedením příkladů je dokazována novomedialita elektronické knihy. Dále je sledován proces remediace z tradičního média knihy do elektronické podoby a jeho důsledky. Tato změna je v textu sledována s ohledem na historické, kulturní a technologické aspekty vývoje. Zpětně jsou pak uvedeny příklady forem textu, které vykazují určité znaky novomediality, a také jsou zkoumány vlivy elektronického média na současnou podobu tištěné knihy. Dalším bodem práce je popis zařízení elektronické čtečky z hlediska jeho funkcí a podpory inovativních technologií, který je podložen osobní zkušeností. Součástí práce je studie, kdy byl na základě dotazníku vytvořen profil současného čtenáře e-knihy zobrazující postoje respondentů k elektronickým knihám a jejich vztah k nové technologii s důrazem na komparaci výhod a nevýhod tištěných a elektronických knih. V závěru práce je položena otázka, zda nová digitální forma knihy má tendenci v určitém směru nahradit klasickou knihu a jsou zde uvedeny jevy, které pravděpodobně tomuto vývoji mohou zabránit.

Abstract:

The bachelor work „The electronic book from the point of view of new media theory“ deals with problemacy of electronic book and electronic text in light of typical characterisitcs of new media as they are defined by Martin Listen and Lev Manovich. The neomediality of electronic book is testified by application of those characteristics and presentation of examples. Further on, the process of remediation from traditional book into its electronic form and its consequences are followed. This change is observed with regard of historical, cultural and technological aspects of development. The examples of forms of text, that show certain signs of neomediality, are retroactively stated in the work. Also the impacts of electronic media on contemporary form of printed book are examined. In the next part of the work, it is described the functioning of electronic reader from the point of view of its functions and support of innovative technologies. This part of the work is based on personal experience. Another part of the work is a study that describes a typical reader of e-books. The profile of the reader was created by the method of questionnaire when the respondents were asked about their opininon on electronic books and their attitude towards new technologies with a stress on comparison of advantages and disadvantages of both typical printed and electronic books. The question asked at the end of the work aims to find out whether new digital form of book tends to replace classical book in any way. There are also stated phenomenons that will most probably preclude such thing.
