Purism. Positive contribution to the German language or disaster?

Abstract:

Purism. Positive contribution to the German language or disaster? The development of language is subject to various influences, and perhaps the most significant changes came and are still coming from the language users, the humans. The direction, in which the German language was in no small measure influenced, was an effort to purify it from the influence of foreign words. This effort is called purism. The word is derived from Latin “purus”, meaning pure or clean and its representatives were called the purists. The purists are often termed as the pests, which brought more harm than help to the language. The goal of my study, was to determine, whether the purists really deserve such a negative appreciation. In the theoretical part of this work, my aim was to introduce the selected representatives of the German purism and bring near their aspirations, the reasons and goals that led them to defend their mother tongue and to fight for its purity. In the practical part, fifteen words from the dictionary of Johann Heinrich Campe, one of the most successful and famous purist, were analyzed. The aim was to determine the origin of the foreign words Germanized by Campe from the etymological point of view, his reasons for taking this step and ultimately, the success of his new words in comparison with the original ones.

Purismus. Pozitivní přínos pro německý jazyk nebo katastrofa? Vývoj jazyka podléhá nejrůznějším vlivům a asi největší měrou se na jeho změnách podíleli a stále podílejí samotní uživatelé jazyka, tedy lidé. Směr, který německý jazyk v nemalé míře ovlivnil, byla snaha, očistit jej od vlivu cizích slov. Toto úsilí nazýváme purismus. Slovo je odvozeno od latinského „purus“ – čistý a jeho představitelé tak dostali nálepku puristé. Puristé jsou dnes často označováni za škůdce jazyka, kteří své mateřštině více ublížili, než pomohli. Mým cílem bylo zjistit, zda si puristé opravdu zaslouží takto negativní hodnocení. V teoretické části má tato práce za úkol představit vybrané představitele německého purismu a přiblížit tak jejich snahy, důvody a cíle, které je vedly k obraně jejich mateřštiny a bojům za její čistotu. Praktická část se zabývá analýzou patnácti slov ze slovníku jednoho z nejúspěšnějších a nejznámějších puristů, a to Johanna Heinricha Campeho. Cílem je zjistit původ cizích slov z etymologického hlediska, které Campe poněmčil, jeho důvody k tomuto kroku a v neposlední řadě úspěšnost jeho nových slov v porovnání s původními.
